i would think the late thirties and early forties were the golden age, afterall didnt "gone with the wind" ,"the wizard of oz", "the ten commandments",and "citizen cane" all come out in 1939. and im not sure if "ben hur" came out about that time also. but i could be wrong. thats alot of classics all around the same time

I can't believe no one has mentioned my favorite - Jaws! I still can't swim in the damn ocean without hearing the menacing music in my head. Good acting, multiple character types, and great special effects on the shark, considering it was 1975.

Part of me wishes it was never made due to the environmental ramifications. But it was, so I'll keep enjoying it each time I watch it.

Most film industry insiders regard that the late 1930s was the golden age of the studio system. But they regard the 1970s as era in which the highest quality films were made, and that the easy money which began with the explosion of the business in the 1980s ruined everything. I agree with them, and think the same thing happened in the recording industry at the same time.

I agree with them that these French New Wave influenced films, with their authentic and naturalistic qualities, stand up against any other list.

When revenues exploded with the introduction of video and foreign markets the bankers, accountants, and financiers hijacked the industry.

Yeah I like some of the narration, but that has the "happy ending", I prefer the elevator door closing to the credits. The ultimate collectors edition is nice, with a documentary that is quite in depth.
