That is an excellent question! I would argue that the $1 + trillion dollars the US spent in Iraq could have easily prevented the "current poverty" from occurring. The trillion dollars + would have been much better spent rebuilding America's infrastructure. Instead Koop-aid sippers (like you know who) thought it was much wiser to invest in Iraq's infrastructure. Had we invested the $$$$$ in America's infrastructure, the "current poverty" level could have been easily been reduced significantly.
As for me, I have always been an America first kinda guy. Apparently LL is an Iraq first kinda guy! Therein lies the difference!

Order In The Court Room
Spoken in loud voice:
Let's have order in the court room! (Gavel slams!)
Bailiff please admonish that raucous individual from any more outbursts or remove him bodily from this court room if he creates any further distractions.
This court is recessed until the defense and prosecution can decide who is on what side or be held in contempt!
The primary focus of this hearing is how do we reduce the poverty rate in this country and we can dispense with the imaginary WMDs in Iraq.

There's a big difference between threadjack and threaddrift. IMHO, threadjack should be avoided whereas threaddrift can be tolerated.

But it is so much fun watching the guy who attempted to portray himself as the Heavyweight Champion of the Houston Political Forums transform into an Overstuffed Punching Bag!
Life is good!

You watch too much "wrestling" on TV. Or do you actually go "live"?
BT, you are true to form irrespective of the forum ... if you don't like the way the conversation is going .. i.e. inconsistent with your view of the world through the colored lenses of op-ed articles.... you "drift" the subject ... to divert the focus away from the informtion you do not wish to see.
That's not a "punching bag" at which you are swinging .. it's your shadow.

Real Poverty Problem
Gentlemen, can we get back on topic?
The problem of poverty in this country is a very real problem and has never been worse.
That ugly fact bothers me and it should bother you too.
Our discussion here would much more productive, if we could put all that brain power toward practical solutions rather than personal attacks.
Right now, Europe seems to be disintegrating and over here, the banks are in serious trouble.
US unemployment is stubbornly high and we need to steer this country right.
Washington seems to be waging a war against itself instead of directing its energy toward solutions.
. . . Let's stop throwing punches and hear some solutions!

Pulling Teeth
It's like pulling teeth with you guys.
So how did the most powerful country in the world now has the highest poverty rate it has ever had since this data was recorded?
It is downright shameful that we have come to this.
When even the banks who you think would be the experts in managing money are still in serious trouble even after $700 Billion in TARP money, what can you expect from the little guy on the street?
. . . More importantly how do we get our ox out of the ditch?

Historically, when countries reach this point of dysfunctionality, especially superpowers, the country implodes. The hoi polloi revolt and government collapses.
I'm afraid with the current gridlock, not only in DC, but across the nation, that is what we face. Those of you who are somewhat paranoid or conspiracy theorists need to start stocking those armed shelters I know you have in your back yards.

Optimism Not Apocalypse
I was hoping for a little more optimism on this topic rather than the pessimism of apocalyptic scenarios.
The USA is still a superpower and we have gone through many worse problems than the crisis we are facing today, but this situation is urgent.
World War I was supposed to be "The War to End All Wars", but instead it spawned World War II and yet this nation survived those horrors and the Great Depression too.
At a minimum, I propose that this country needs to:
1. We need to get ALL our troops out of those idiotic wars that we never should have gone in to begin with. I mean now, this year.
2. We need to rebuild our infrastructure and put all those construction workers back to work.
3. Eliminate the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy and put our financial house in order.
4. Cut defense spending in half.
5. Washington needs to stop the endless fighting and focus on the economy.
6. It IS the economy, stupid!
