I've owned and operated, been the lead admin of, on the admin team of and been a moderator of several boards in my time on the glorious interwebs.

I can tell you with certainty that it's often a complete goddamn hassle to do and you will always have a variety of people who either think they can do it better or who think that nothing gets done. Sometimes they are right. Sometimes they couldn't be more wrong.

The sign of a good admin team and great mods is when you don't notice their presence and don't miss their presence at the same time. They handle things publicly only as needed and make the tough calls. They guide issues towards PM. They don't discuss discipline of one member with another. They set and keep policy up to date. They set the tone for acceptable behavior and need to try to remain impartial. However, they need to react just as much on gut instinct to shut down a situation before it gets out of hand as they need to abide by the letter of the law. Sometimes they get it wrong. And that's why there should never just be one mod.

People dislike staff when they perceive inequity. However, you'll never know just what is being done and what fires are being put out on a daily basis unless u're a mod.

Yeah, threads should stay on topic, but a judgement call needs made based on the mutual understanding of the staff. Some will rule with a heavier hand than others and be considered assholes on a power trip for using their mod powers. At the same time, others will slack on their responsibilities and not answer PM's, approve reviews or read threads.

Being a mod does mean u need to limit yourself from the community. You can't just be a regular asshole. You have to be a responsible asshole and reign in the bag of cats that are the members.

Doesn't matter if the board is about crocheting sweaters or hobbying with providers. There are rules and there are mods to enforce them. Should there be term limits? That's not for the bag of cats to decide. It's for the owner of the bag to determine. It's not a democracy.

If a mod is abusing their power or causing more problems than they are solving with their actions or inactions they should be relieved of their responsibilities. But again, that's not for the masses to decide.

My favorite boards were the ones that self policed within reason. Every once in awhile the crew needed a kick in the ass when they went too far. But at the end of the day people knew what to expect and knew what the staff expected. That let the staff focus on the other administrative tasks that need to happen to keep a forum functioning.

Very good point DH. And makes sense...its the premise of "if its not broken, don't fix it". I can see both sides of the issue, I'm just obviously closer to the forum I'm in. I'm sure there are others similar to the one I'm in, and others that are great to post in.

And as to the post whore, I didn't read the last response because I'm pretty sure I knew what it was going to say before she even wrote it. She not very original if you go read a few of her posts...noisy & wordy-yes...original, no. We have a few like her as well as I'm sure every forum has, thinking they are the last bastion for female rights...they all sound the same, trust me.

Making hateful statements that are slanderous is not much of a discussion, and if that's the best you can do....I gotta say, I'm somewhat disappointed in you. Not sure what you mean by the "Real" work, as most only think a Mod, moderates when folks are being rude and inappropriate, so I'm sure you understand why we might find that vague and not much of an explanation, but rather some words thrown together to make something other than a one liner.
