Are you confusing a mistress with a courtesan?

I do understand that some women feel a strong connection to the idea of being a courtesan , and for most I believe they see it as something to aspire to .

For myself I try to avoid most labels because reality is I just do not fitI feel that as long as I am being ethical with the people who I meet the rest is simply in the eye of the beholder.

Since you throw in the marketing card, let's dissect the variables on how one "perceives" (distinguishes) oneself.
The way YOU (or Ansley) perceive yourself IS fundamentally different from the way how I perceive myself, but it still doesn't negate the fact that we are still escorts/providers/companions (or even courtesans).

Example:
  • You're tall and slender, while am curvy and average in height.
  • You're British, while I'm a Jamaican.
  • You're Caucasian, and I'm Black
Isn't this how YOU perceive (distinguish) yourself, thus projecting your distinction to the "beholder" as you put it?

You're listing (above) defined tangible elements. Being British is not down to perception, it is an absolute that can be unequivocally proven...in just the same way that being female can. This is not subjective material.
This whole thread has shown that what make a courtesan is as subjective as whether someone is beautiful, funny etc.
Apples and oranges and yes, subjectivity is guided by marketing whether you like it or not.
The basic rule in consumber marketing Nicholette is that it does not matter how you (the vendor) see your service because you are not buying it. It's the consumer that makes that decision. You aid their interpretation by marketing. If you think being British/female is as subjective as being a courtesan then I don't know what to tell you.

As someone that knows you are culturally aware, extremely well read, sensitive to the nuances of others and better traveled than many I took it as a compliment whether intended that way or not

Just curious, why is active advertising seems to be viewed as something less classy than referrals? In my perception, referrals imply a culture where participation in this world is shared between real-life acquaintances - a situation a lot less common in our days than historically.

I would suspect that majority of people do not have access to personal referral networks and if interested in this activity, have to rely on internet searches. Of course, I am biased since I met several absolutely amazing men for extended engagements who have never seen an escort before, could not imagine talking to anybody in their circle about it, and thus there is no way for them to be referred...

Thanks. But in a way, the topic has lost its personal relevance for me some time ago and is now merely an interest in history and culture - and I already have a backlog of books to read...

Touche'. And a little cardamom on the popcorn is a nice (addictive) change of pace.
Where is that vibrating popcorn popper, anyway?

(Well stated definition, however. Variety truly is the spice of this thing we call the human existence.)

For the record, I never said it was less classy. I merely asked a question. Would a true Courtesan Advertise? Two things: First, I would assume that running in such an elite circle of men that she would be passed around discreetly. Second, I doubt she would want to be the least bit visual in the public eye...probably would not want to be recognized.

Less classy? No. A different Class? Yes.

Sorry if it came this way. To me, it just felt from the tone of the overall discussion that advertising is something less desirable than lack of it. I was curious if it was just my perception.

That would be "perceived value of goods or service".

You brought up "marketing 101" , and so, I pointed out how we each perceived (distinguished) ourselves differently, as opposed to being one in the same. How did we get from Courtesan and her clientele to consumer marketing, anyway?

You say tomahto, I say tomato.
