while not a fan of billy the globalist that's not true. well kinda true. he bought DOS for a "steal" of a price. he and Paul Allen bought DOS from Seattle Software. for a reported 50,000. lock, stock and barrel.
without of course disclosing they had a deal with IBM to provide an OS for their PC-XT computer. not that they had to of course and whoever discussed it at Seattle Software didn't ask. and not like Paul Allen would have told him if he did ask.
and it was the founder of Digital Research .. of DR-DOS fame, who had the first shot. stories vary on what happened. some say that dude at DR was late to meet with IBM and IBM being IBM wanted a signed NDA. his wife wouldn't sign it so IBM left. other stories say he wouldn't sign it and IBM left. either way he had the first shot and it fell through. the latter is probably the right story. the dude wouldn't sign IBM's NDA.
door opens for Gates and Allen. they hear tell of this, go to Boca Raton FL where the fledgling IBM PC division was building the PC-XT and pitch an operating system for it. an OS they didn't yet have. as the story goes they bluffed IBM into thinking they had an OS already, went back to Seattle and bought DOS. for 50k.
it's also been said Gates did not go to meet with Seattle software, only Allen. why?
because at 27 years old this is what Gates looked like ..
this is what 30 year old Paul Allen looked like
who would you send into a meeting? a 27 year old guy who looked like he's still in high school or a 30 year old guy who looked 40?
