Completely different situation. Smoking creates risks to the health of non-smoking patrons and employees. The government has very wide latitude to keep one person's actions from harming the health of another.

If I wear boots and a cowboy hat, am I primarily identifying myself as a redneck as opposed to an American? A yarmulke, a Jew, etc. ad finitum.

Yes, a minstrel show is a form of entertainment.

You'd be identifying yourself as a Redneck American. JUst as they are identifying themselves as Middle Easterners. There is nothing either wrong or right about that. It just is. Whether that is the reality is not the issue. The issue was the projection of reality. MLK could have worn a Sheet and hood and folks would have thought he was part of the KKK. So MLK in a hood and sheet could spark an irrational fear in another black. That is another thing Juan discussed but you would have to listen the the whole transcript to hear that.( irrational fears, not MLK! lol)

So from my POV it is idiotic for NPR to fire Juan for the discussion of the origin of irrational fears.

the real difference between fox and msnbc' or for that matter obama et al and the tea party et al, is at least one loves america as the ideal enshrined in its founding documents...yes america hasnt always lived up to that ideal..but one side loves that and the other loves maybe the real estate of america or some groups in america, not any individuals but some woe-be-gone groups, who just cant make it on their own and we need to help them so we can feel better (not I help them but you listen to me and you help them) and has some misquided thought of correcting everything wrong in the founding documents and then we will be ok as long as we are in charge of you idiots.
