Your assumption is she is rich. She could represent the government and the kid the taxpayer.
The kid waited at the rail for the ball working so very hard to catch the attention of the player.
No sooner than she thinks she has done a great job and is about to be rewarded.
The government swoops in and takes what she earned to more than likely give it to some other kid that had done nothing to earn it or deserve it.

That is what it looked like to me.
