I am not calling you a socialist by any means, but the idea sort of is. I agree that we definitely need less of the USofC. But the alternative seems to be to make workers stronger which is sort of a socialist principle.

How is removing our current representatives and installing a constitutional amendment barring corperate donations and limiting lobbying by corperations socialist? Are you telling me that in 1777 we had corperate lobbying and donation as we do now? Limiting influences by corperate in goverment is far from socialist. Socialism is goverment ownership of the means of production. This in fact is a move towards a better republic because it returns representation back to the people, at least in my opinion. Term limits rid the system of the professional politician who is far more likely in my opinion to do what ever it takes to be re-elected. A person nearing the end of his term can vote based on the merrits of a bill and not on how his or her vote can be perceived and who it will anger and how many votes will be lost etc. etc. .......

Thanks, fritz3552. That is a vital distinction. However, it's not just about coverage, is it? It's about cost and availability and quality and a host of other factors in the package.

It's not simple legislation that's easy to pass because there are so many players in the game and so many competing interests.

I applaud our President for tackling this growing monster so early in his administration instead of "kicking the can down the road" and let the next generation and the next President wrestle with this beast.

I believe that the corporations that oppose him on this are the same ones who are taking advantage of patients and don't want to lose that stream of income.

I can see that, but they're missing the bigger picture. They are only interested in that piece of the puzzle because it's to their benefit.

The President is the one who has to make all the pieces of the puzzle fit.

Other countries provide this benefit for their citizens. So why are there so many US citizens without health care?

Because it's too damn expensive, that's why!

A point of order before we continue. I want to point out that we've had almost 5 pages of posts on a potentially hot and partisan topic, and at no time has the discussion deteriorated into bickering or name-calling. There have been sailient points made on both sides of the issue, disagreements on points, requests for clariification and verificcation and lots of opinion. Thanks to all who have participated and to those who may yet participate for their level-headed discussion and to the mods for allowing thus discussion to continue.

This should be a person, not people, coming from another country, not other countries, in this example. Again, if we have more leaving the US for health care than we have arriving here for health care, then the numbers speak for themselves. I think we have a great system, even though we are not known as the best, and don't take my thoughts of us not having the best health care system in the world as saying we have inept doctors or bad health care in general. Health care reform is more about the insurance industry and helping those that lack coverage. It is about making sure that more are allowed to get some of the best heath care in the world. In that article, there are many questions left unanswered though. Who was paying for the procedure? Was the procedure available in other provinces? Why is he only going to talk about it after the procedure? Hell, what is the procedure? And finally, why would anyone be for seal hunting? LOL.

We have term limits now, six years on senators, four years on presidents, and two years on representatives. This is an election year. If you really want your voice to be heard, boot the current representatives out (State and National) and replace them with ANYBODY else. Parties don't matter, their money all comes from the same lobbies. Maybe new faces will have the willingness to kill the influence of lobbies. VOTE for CHANGE. Until the voters put fear in Congress, we cannot be heard.
