If you excuse yourself to go shower and clean up but sit in there for ten minutes without turning on the shower it might seem a little suspicious. I think what they mean is close the bathroom door and turn on the shower so that it will diminish that concern as well as the added benefit of the whooshing of the running water helping to drown out the noise of you showing that turd who's boss.

True but the new toilets are built for water conservation which usually take a couple of flushes to get it good and clean. A lot of people aren't aware of this. However if this "turd" was as major as it sounds coupled with the fact that the OP didn't know about how weak the new tiolets are then it's entirely possible that the poor toilet didn't stand a chance in the first place.
