That actually IS the problem with the Steelers as a franchise. They had a great team throughout the 90s, other than one thing - a franchise QB. They had Bubby, ODonnell, Kordell, Tomczak, and Maddox - none of whom could get it done. Once they finally had a rate losing season (I believe 6-10 IIRC) they were in a position to pick the franchise QB and proceeded to win 2 Super Bowls as a result.
They actually NEED another crappy season like that. No, I don’t want to see them go 5-12 or something like that, but that would be what is best in the long run. They actually had a chance to do that a few years back when Ben was out for the year, but they traded their first rounder for a safety who was great that year, and they went 8-8 as a result. Had they kept that first rounder and tanked down to 5-11 or so, they might have gotten a Justin Herbert or similar QB. Of course, knowing the “Steeler Way” they probably would have taken a LB instead.
Even more today, the QB is of paramount importance. You can beat bad and mediocre teams by running the ball and playing good defense, but it takes an explosive offense with a good passing game to beat good teams. The Steelers certainly don’t have that, and they rarely beat the really good teams (as evidenced by the recent losing streak and the lack of playoff wins over the past 7 seasons). Heck, they SAY that they want to focus on the running game, but they can’t even do that effectively. If they are do great at running, why could they not gain a half yard in three plays against a poor defense? Why are they among the lowest ranked teams in yards per carry?
They need a philosophy change. The way they play isn’t working. Tomlin doesn’t seem likely to embrace or implement such a change. He is not a bad coach (he isn’t an elite coach either), but it is time for a change. Unfortunately, that isn’t the “Steeler Way” and he will likely remain on the job until he decides to quit.

That was 2019 trading for Fitzpatrick. Most felt like you and was hoping they would get a top ten pic to hopefully get a good QB but Tomlin’s ego/self was far more important than the future of the team.
The last year they won a playoff game was 2016, 9 years ago. Most coaches would have been let go long before 9 mediocre years.
Is not having a losing season really any better than what the Browns have been doing the same years.
Take Tomlin’s coaching staff philosophy compared to Noll. Noll said he surrounded himself with the best coach’s he could for the betterment of the team and himself, does anyone feel Tomlin remotely manages in that fashion.
Oh well, we more than likely get to witness being embarrassed by Baltimore. At one time along with losing to Dallas that was something most Steelers and fans hated.
Tomlin can be proud he didn’t have a losing season or did he?

Not at all. But Saturday night's loss was definitely on the players. It just was. And it's ok to admit it. There wasn't a goddamn thing coaching could have done with that shitshow - for reasons I've already laid out.

"The buck stops here".
"The Captain goes down with the ship."
A coach is a position of leadership, of command, you are the General that command the troops to win for the King, history does not relieve those in command of responsibility.
Tomlin is a festering tumor, his cancer has metasticized and spread to the rest of the team.
Either remove the cancer or the team dies, because that's EXACTLY what I have seen for the last 9 years, and I recognized the symptoms BEFORE he was hired.
Time has proven me correct, year, after year.

I thought it was a poorly played game and a worse coaching effort.
8 passes thrown in the first half?? Something like 11 runs on first down in a row?? Come on man.
And word is out that was all on Tomlin. You don’t know football if you think that’s smart football in today’s NFL.
I look for Art Smith to look for any excuse he can to get the hell out of here. It wouldn’t shock me if he took a lateral move.

If the team is so much better now than when Pickett played why is the record the same.
Same excuses in defense of the present QB’s and Tomlin, offensive line and coordinators.
Some say give Fields another chance but wouldn’t give Pickett the same treatment.

I already addressed that. You must have glossed over it. Saturday night was 99.9% on the players. Vince Lombardi himself couldn't have done anything to win that game.

Pickett never faced a schedule like this year's, and he had a better defense bailing him out.
Fields and Wilson are both light years ahead of Kenny, who was the worst starting QB in Steelers history. Pickett threw 13 TDs combined in two years. Russell has 16 this year in 11 games - and people are saying he should be benched.
There's no comparison.

I don’t think he should be benched at all. Just let Russ cook! They only way win at Baltimore is get out early and make them nervous and throw. If we come out with 11 straight runs on 1st daws we’re dead.

Agreed there. Hopefully this team can avoid complete implosion and get back to owning the Ravens. Doesn't seem that far fetched. Charlie Batch won in Baltimore lol.

Absolutely, and it affects everything else. When the O-line does their job, the offense keeps the ball, kills clock, scores points, lets the defense rest, keeps Lamar off the field, etc.

Agree. And we invest how many high draft picks lately for that line and still can’t get shit out of them.
I get it, players make plays, but a great coach knows how to get the most out of his players. And a very hands on coach like Tomlin has influence with players we pick.
Heard Tomlin said something about how we need good ball control offense with a lot of running. The definition of insanity is doing the same failing crap over and over.
Hey let’s run the ball 11 straight times on first down.

Lamar Jackson's favorite target, Zay Flowers, is likely to be out for the Wild Card game. Could be huge.
Steelers are 9-3 in their last 12 games against the Ravens. No reason to be freaked out, or expect a loss.
