a 30 day reprieve, and both Canada and Mexico thinking they need to find some saner/more stable trading partners, like say maybe China? Trump did lasting damage no matter how this turns out.
fool me once, shame on you. fool me twice, shame on me. that's how Mexico and Canada will view this.
further, tariffs make no sense when you don't have a corresponding domestic manufacturing industry to support. that's why blanket tariffs make no sense. when was the last time we made all of our own stuff, or had a domestic steel industry to support?
if you want to reshore American manufacturing, you need to meet the potential factory owners where they're at. "what do you need to make this happen?" that's the only question that matters.
tariffs are way too blunt an instrument. they will just drive up inflation for no good reason.
