I'm sure it was tried via diplomatic channels. Rightly or wrongly the Turks believe the Kurdish militias in Syria are allied with Kurdish terrorists in Turkey. One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. The possible flaw in your argument is if we didn't try hard enough to keep this from happening. I'm all for great relations with and between the Turks and the Kurds, but that may be as difficult as bringing Israelis and Palestinians together.
the flaw in your reply is what else could we have done? impose sanctions on a NATO Ally? get the useless UN to issue some useless security council edict? that Turkey would have ignored anyway? might have looked better in the press but useless.

Trump wants U.S. troops out of Syria. Fine. but do it with a minimum of disruption.
They could have worked something out with the Russians on providing a Northern safe zone instead of the Turks there.
But it is obvious that there are people inside the Pentagon and in the state dept. who are not willing to provide alternate advice that supports his policy. These are the people who support the "forever war" concept.
