"Therapists" remind me of those credit protection ("LifeLock") commercials about folks who "identify" the problem, but don't take care of it.
As in:
"How do you feel today?" ... or
"How are you feeling today?" ... or
"What do you think?"
About like showing up at the provider's incall, pay the fare, and she hands you a bottle of Jergens and some Kleenex.... and no instructions!

.. I guess she felt fortunate that she didn't fart a lot!
Either way ....

The first 2 lol
And some would be surprised at how much someone just asking "How do you feel?" and listening to what you think can help when it comes to depression.
So many people can't understand what real depression is like. They are very fortunate and I am happy for them.
My therapist did not identify the "problem". She gave the correct (for me) prompts that helped ME identify what was causing MY depressed state.
But it's true. Knowing the cause does not necessarily solve the issue.

So the instructions would make that session worth it?

I hope the OP got the help he needed.
Other than a couple of decent replies to his inquiry it is almost depressing the stupidity of some of you.

Customarily, if there is insurance coverage the "counseling sessions" manage to resolve the necessity for the initial appointments when the coverage is exhausted, and the last session gives you some guidance on how to cope with onset of any depressing events in the future, such as a meaningless remark from someone who couldn't find his own ass with both hands when it comes to interpersonal relationships as he critiques others' comments, even when those other comments were clearly intended to be humorous.

If professional medical advice is not a feasible option, a support group of individuals with similar issues would be a good place to start... as Brooke suggested.

I got the impression that the "depression" was not related to a physiological condition or illness, but perhaps some life circumstances that had burdened him with a lot of negative thoughts. Additionally, physicians/shrinks have a tendency to "resolve" psychological issues by writing prescriptions and IMO that just is a band-aid or replacement for the underlying issue or issues that are generating those "feelings."
At the same time "group" therapy (even a "support group") has to be a guided experience with an end goal of "graduating" to a self-reliant status so the individual can cope with the normal day-in-and-day-out frustrations and setbacks that generate "depressing" or "negative" thoughts. Being around folks who are struggling, if not drowning, themselves can be counterproductive, if not further deepen the "depression."
So selecting a balance and members of the "support" group can be critical and require a level of skill and attention that someone already struggling with depression is not qualified to accomplish. I'm not a "Bible thumper," but religious groups can be uplifting and positive, while at the same time economically feasible, so long as there isn't an "upsell" to join the church or make commitments to a particular religious belief with which one is not comfortable.
Krystal Alert: The above is not humor!

Lots of the groups in the link I posted take place at church, however, I don't think they are ran by them.
OP ... if you are religious, call churches in your area they should offer lots of help, but if you are not religious, I would not listen to anyone that tells you god hears, helps & heals. He does those things about as much as santa claus bring presents and the easter bunny brings eggs. The last thing a non religious depressed person needs to hear is how much the sky fairy loves them. Nothing but added pressure.

And while this meme is meant to be funny, it's probably the most accurate thing posted in this thread. Get out and move. Walk. Bullshit. Waste time exploring and having fun. Play in the rain. Clean your house. Wash your car. Get moving. Do stuff you have never done before and if there are certain things that make you depressed, stop doing those. If you smoke ciggs, you must stop. Dramatic changes in your life will bring dramatic changes to your life. If you have no one to have fun with, and a clean criminal history, call big brother/big sister and be a big brother to someone. That alone has the ability to change your life.

LL....the only thing in this thread I thought was humorous was the idea of showing up for a session with hooker and she hands you lotion and Kleenex after you paid.
Otherwise, I have only been attempting to participate in a discussion about a subject that I have some personal experience with. I do apologize if I have offended you or anyone else. That would never be my intention.

You mean you didn't find any humor in seeking "depression advice" on a hooker board? Perhaps why you suffered from "depression."
A sense of humor can go a long way toward relieving "depression"!
This reminds me of a group therapy session with folks who attempted suicide for the purpose of sharing and seeking guidance in pursuing one's life into the future. Think about it! Someone who can't even kill themselves is going to give advice on anything?
90% of the "credibility" on this board is based on who can rent the most pussy and report about it! The other side is who can rent the most pussy and receive reports on it!
Now that's a reliable source for improving one's outlook on life!
