you are right, Charles, thanks for posting the original. Must be a journalist who probably never got an appointment with the "hooker" of his dreams ;-)

on my real FB i add only people i know or people i know via friends of friends. Only exception: Polyamory - activists and researchers. I work with them but some of them i have never met personally but we share the same lists and discussion groups in the internet. Complete strangers not welcome. My life is not heteronormative enough for complete strangers :-)

I find FB rather like reading a newspaper -- most of the article are of no interest what so ever.

One advantage is Facebook is less intrusive. If we were FB "Friends" I can share with you pictures from my vacation or sound off on last night's ballgame (or more likely in real time during the game). If you are interested you can engage with me, if not you don't.

Sure I could email all of this to you, but unless we were really close friends, you probably don't want an inbox clogged up by my updates.

So you could say it is a more passive way to share non-urgent items with a broader audience.

I can say in the year or two I've been on facebook I have seen a significant drop in the number of "chain" or "forwarded" emails. You know the "ha ha" kind of stuff or the "check out this article" emails. Now somebody just posts it on their FB page.

It probably is a stretch to say it is superior to email, but for a certain class of communication may be more effective.

I don't actively participate too much on my personal FB unless someone contacts me first, but I do enjoy knowing what everyone is up to and sharing photos with family and friends. Keeps me in the loop on different events and whatnot. It's not the greatest form of communication, it just touches a broader and wider network of people that were hard to keep up with over the years.

Thanks, Charles! I should have also linked to the original.

LOL Nina. His article is somewhere between upsetting and comical to me.

On his map of "Sex in the City: Then and Now" all I can focus on are the words "low density."

Default Hilarious blogger response to the article

I stumbled upon this hilarious response to the original article via Twitter.

"“Gum (Orbit and Trident are favorites). Some swear by those dissolving Listerine strips.”
---We can just see new gum commercial. FOUR OUT OF FIVE HOOKERS CHOOSE TRIDENT!
"

You must click on the link above to get the full effect. Too funny!

New York hookers are flocking to Facebook…. Really?

Y
ou can join the discussion of this topic on our Forum.

Ok, we give in. We were watching this story from sidelines for few days but with 129 articles citing quote “New York hookers are flocking to Facebook” we gotta speak up and make it round 130.

So we made some calls, sent some e-mails and came to conclusion that Daily News stooped to new low. Yes, we know it is rather hard to imagine but it has happened.

Media frenzy started with publication of this “study” by Sudhir Venkatesh published in Wired magazine.

While we were not able to reach any street sex workers, we have been able to talk to number of independent sex workers utilizing internet as their primary advertising source. Here is “blow by blow” of their responses.

According to our “esteemed” researcher

  • Earn about 50 percent more per transaction than a streetwalker
  • Rarely interact with police
  • Are beaten twice a year, on average
  • Try to deduce a client’s place of employment as a security measure
  • Keep working to pay for clothing and shoes

According to real escorts …

  • Earnings range from $300 per hour to $2,000 per minimum of 2 hours.

  • Have number of patrons who actually are employed in various law enforcement agencies

  • Make sure they minimize risk of physical assault by carefully screening potential patrons
  • Require personal information, such as name, last name and place of employment as part of screening process

  • Invest revenues in main stream business ventures and/or finance education

Tools of the trade …
“Two cell phones. Guys sometimes grab a woman’s mobile to gain a sense of power and control.”

--Yeap. That happens ALL the time. First thing guys do is grab their date’s cell phone and run around the room yelling “I got the power!”

Extra panties. “Always bring them—men pay for souvenirs.”

---Considering that many of the clients are married business executives, and average pair of underwear worn by sex workers costs as much as some countries national debt, we can see it happening.

“Band-Aids and cortisone cream for rashes, rawness, and bruises”

---Rashes? Most sex workers we talked to will hightail out of the room if they think there may be a rash anywhere within 5 mile radius.

“Gum (Orbit and Trident are favorites). Some swear by those dissolving Listerine strips.”

---We can just see new gum commercial. FOUR OUT OF FIVE HOOKERS CHOOSE TRIDENT!

“Condoms and lubricant. If the client wants to skip the condom, there’s usually a 25 percent surcharge.”

---If the client wants to skip condom, it will be shortest date in history. It will be OVER.

Where can you find the ladies of the night? Well once you read Mr. Venkateesh’s answer you will understand the rest of this “study”. Here is brilliant discovery …

Where The Action Is

“Of the women I talked to, 61 percent said they’ve used craigslist, mostly for advertising. But even before the crackdown on the site’s adult-services section, sex workers were turning to Facebook: 83 percent have a Facebook page, and I estimate that by the end of 2011, Facebook will be the leading on-line recruitment space”

Once again .. really?????

Craigslist was always virtual sidewalk of escort industry. As for facebook, escorts are real people, they shop in drug stores, go to restaurants, use social media to communicate with friends and family and even do laundry.

May be that will be Mr Venkatesh’s next big discovery …. 100 percent of escorts wash their clothes?

I have a FB page. Had it for a couple of years but haven't been there in a year and a half. Got tired of being solicited by teenage girls who lived on farms and wanted me to plant things with them and young Arab boys looking for whatever Arabs look for.
Can't imagine the time needed to seek legitimate companions who actually lived in an area I would find accessible. That's why I haven't been on site for a long, long time.
