The majority of my post was recounting a book; and, this one author's work.
However, it was widely reported at the time (1991) that Iraqi pilots flew their planes to Iran.
A little Google research shows that 121 aircraft fled to Iran. He wasn't 'hiding' them. Its not like he was going to get them back, or anything. This is why (according to the author), it was an important development when Syria gave the green light to Iraq to use their aircraft.
Like I said in the initial post, this theory of why the war started is the work of one author. I thought it had some veracity, because his writing on the Gulf War is really just a small tangent in his book - his agenda dealt with Israeli politics, not Bush.
