Jackie's right (and on a old pro soapbox :P ). Generally the folks whose info is so ... "need to know" that the paparazzi or such might pay the wayward provider for their info don't look on ECCIE, BP, 411 or the like but use more high end agencies, or have personal assistants/"folks" who know their needs and make the connections FOR them. I used to do body work for folks seeking election, and they all know who to call... trust me they spend more time screening the provider than the provider ever spends screening them... is a business necessity.

I'd be hesitant to give my information to some providers (especially in ICT, there are some crazy ones) because I'd question their discretion. I've seen providers get a text form a client while sitting in my living room and saying, "Oh thats XXXX, He's XXX on the board, he texts me all the time." Anyway, short point is screening works both ways... don't begrudge a girl how she chooses to run her business, and make sure you're doing more than just looking at how "hot" she is in a picture and screen your providers as well.

Good thread and good thoughts by many. My situation? An old pro thats been gone so long I have no referances, but when I was in I looked at the situation very differently. It wasnt me that needed the referances it was her. Generally what I did was get recommendations from providers I was with. Getting to a provider was a easy as a phone call, a few questions, a meeting to get to know and that was it.
It was all about the subtle tells in the first meetings that told each other if it was cool. I suppose maybe these are becoming lost arts, but there are certain things a girl will do if she is ligit as well as a guy. Neither one should ever be rude or mistempered or the trust that isnt there yet takes a leap out the window and me with it.
If a provider has a large enough client base where she can start to pick and choose her clients to suit her, well so be it, she can afford to be rude, but she will find in hard times this will turn on her. The same can go for a client, the word will spread and the guy may find himself with few choices.
Just judging from the number of providers in the area I would say times are good for the ladies and the guys. Supply and demand, lots of great ladies at very reasonable prices right now. Most of which I have been screening dont require refs. The ones that do require refs need to check all your adds. You will have one add up that says nothing about refs untill you google that phone number, then you have other adds that do. I am going to guess at least some of the confusion is right there, I am sure that some guys dont screen and call the first add they like...

I've really enjoyed this thread, and I fully understand the need for screening ... it is really a good idea for both sides.
In my own situation, I've been on the sidelines for about two years, so I have only one review that shows up on this site (my others were on ASPD). I don't believe that lady is in the biz anymore.
I have one other reference from a provider who is mostly inactive these days, and three other ladies I have seen are either retired or, sadly, now no longer with us.
That pretty much leaves me hanging, as far as provider references.
I have been told that one screening method is through employment. But as a self-employed business owner, I personally answer the phone 95 percent of the time. (The other 5 percent of the time, unfortunately, it's my S.O. -- Yikes!)
Even with that, I wonder if many ladies would pass a self-employed business man through the employment verification process, as it almost strikes me as a "fox-guarding-the-chicken-coup" situation? What are your thoughts, ladies?

Not a problem for the right professional lady to accomplish . . . as Elena said, it can (and is) done all the time.
