In respone to the race question; there were many people born in the US over 150 years ago to a black mother and black father but they could "pass" for white. Many of them did exactly that. They were white and that was their choice. Now this sounds good as some above me would think so but what of the aftermath? Would their wife be pretty surprised if the new baby took after dad's parents. I imagine some people would call on their hispanic heritage to explain it.

The whole idea of dividing people by race is an affront to what is American. The only people that should be concerned are the person, their mate, and their physician. Jesse Jackson, Obama, and Sharpton do not need to know nor should they be concerned. Someone should approach Jesse Jackson in public and say "Revernd Jackson, I knew Dr. King, Dr. King was a friend of mine. Reverend Jackson...you're no Dr. Martin Luther King Jr."

It's amazing how these threads are started and go so far off topic or the real truth inside of someone comes to light. Bottom line is a child is dead, black or white, a child is dead. A man committed murder, justified or not, he murdered the child. Both families are going to be affected by this for the rest of their lives. Calling him a child is disingenuous at best, misleading and agenda driven at worst. 17 year olds have served in wars, and in the state of Texas, they are considered adults for criminal prosecution. In other words, a 17 year old in Texas can get the death penalty. 17 year olds, especially those who are 6'3" tall and want to be gangstas, can inflict serious bodily injury and or death. For poppy; murder is a very specific charge and what Zimmerman did does not rise to that (the jury said so) so you need to withdraw the comment and go on.

If you support abortion then you have to support verdict. One reason given for the necessity of abortion is for unwanted children who will grow up to commit crimes. Thrown out by his step mom, estranged from his real mother...sounds like he was unwanted and getting into criminal acts. He becomes the perfect example for abortion supporters. @ Poppy, Martin wasn't a child. He was a kid; a punk kid to be exact, but he wasn't a child. And even more specifically, he wasn't a murdered child. Throughout antiquity parentage is specific through the mother. That is it is clear who the mother is but not the father so therefore the nationality and religion (race wasn't that big of a deal until the Modern Era) of a child are given to the child through the mother's line. So the mother's line carries much more weight historically.

Second, progress can only be made by discussion or experience. Progress is something measured by degree. More is better but any is better than none. I'm sure there is a tipping point for understanding but there's no telling what that point is in individuals. Different people will have different tipping points. Understanding you may never understand is a position. Knowing you may not understand is a good starting point.

I thought about which order to put those two suggestions in. I ended up with the order I used because you propose stifling debate and I thought I caught a whiff of "separate but equal". I will concede that may be the scent of twirly permeating the entire site. But if you don't like the conflict present in some of the threads in Sandbox, The Political Forum, or any other forum where the mean people hang out, put some talcum powder on your vagina and stay out of them.
