Norfolk Southern has a lot to explain here. sensor failures, operators not being observant. don't these trains have rear-view mirrors? they should have cameras as well.

Rear view mirrors are for a reverse move. By time the engineer sees a problem in the mirror, it is too late. If there indeed was an equipment problem, the defect detector should have caught it and sent a warning to the train crew. Would be kind of difficult to determine after the intense flames immersed the equipment.

some of the comments on that tweet raise the possibility that it's from other sources such as oil from the asphalt from the road nearby and various other possible explanations however they are missing the point given that there was a recent massive release of toxic chemicals in the town.

Jesse Watters just mentioned that not only didn't the EPA do any testing before telling people it was safe but that the railroad did the testing by hiring out some contractor to do it. also he reported these contractors are going to people's homes to test but requiring people to sign a release of liability. this is what happens when the railroad covers its ass while the EPA does nothing.
