The emotional/psychological impact was (and is) particularly significant on those who did not mature in a military/combat home environment and/or those who "joined" for job and career training, but were thrust into combat as world events changed the "focus" of the military. IMO due to the negatives from the S.E. Asia experience the emphasis with recruiting was education/job training when the reality was that was a "recruiting tool" to make quotas, although the reality always existed that the recruit would serve in combat either directly or as support in harms way.
