I mean you if want to get conspiratorial, the Chinese could infect athletes from around the world with something devastating and send them back to their home countries. After all, what have they suffered from the rest of the world for Covid?

Holy crap....you so called conseratives want to be like Jimmy Carter and boycott the Olympics...a forced boycott.
I like Jimmy Carter but I hated that decision.
It is fucking unamerican.
You boys are sounding like these religious folks who want to make it illegal to screw a hooker...
If you don't want to screw a hooker , don't. If you don't want to buy a gun, don't. If you don't want to have an abortion, don't. If you don't want to participate in the Olympics, don't.
But don't screw it up for all of us that do!

I'm a work in progress.
Buy rest assured, I don't wonder if Lucas will read everything I write and therefore give his words as little thought as he gives mine.

Earlier someone pointed out that the US went to Germany in 1936 for the Olympics. You know, the whole Nazi thing. Anyway, venues are chosen years ahead of time before the actual games. Berlin was chosen long before Hitler came to power. As someone pointed out, this was before World War II started, before the Jews were put in concentration camps, before the atrocities, before a lot of things. A lot of historians have said that if Hitler had retired in 1938 (two years later than the Olympics) he would have gone down as a great 20th century leader like Churchill.
The important thing to remember is that you have to judge the actions of people in the times that they happened. Now, China has enslaved peoples, conquered other countries, threatened the stability of other countries, taken the freedom away from the people of Hong Kong (violating the terms of the turnover), they have stolen intellectual property, and they have unleashed not once, not twice, but at least three times plagues upon the world.

The inability to be concise is generally a sign of people that need to try to prove they’re smart. It’s also generally how they fail to do so.

Interesting take.
How do you reckon all the guys who claim today’s Democrats are the same as those at the time of the Civil War and Vice versa.

How does punishing our athletes make sense?
Please someone explain.

I guess that wasn't you trying to prove how smart you are on the Rittenhouse matter and failed miserably?
What other reason would there be for being here or engaging in any debate other than to prove one is smarter than the other. I'm under no illusion that I am smarter than "everybody else" but I was sure as hell smarter than you in the Rittenhouse matter and I proved it much to your dismay I would guess.

I'll take that to mean that you can't really dispute what I said. Much easier to label something nonsensical than to prove me wrong which you have recently had a "setback" in trying to do so I guess I understand your "hesitancy".

I have questioned in the past if our form of government is the best vs more authoritarian types such as Russia, China, Saudi Arabia.
Isn't that the question or paradox?

Why is boycotting the Olympics a punishment for the athletes?

Is it better for one person to keep a billion people in check versus having 300 million people decide if a bridge in Connecticut needs repair?

It's only every four years. If athletes are lucky, they get to participate in only 2 of them. If they are really really lucky 3 of them. And if they are just so much better than others that they start in their teens and are still elite in their early 30's they get 4. But there is a reason that father time remains undefeated in the shelf life of an athlete - age and attrition are unavoidable eventually.

Most of them have to qualify and the majority have only one chance. The super athletes get more than one but they are rare and we remember them because they are rare. Unlike Jimmy Carter, the US and other interested countries could have their own competition and show the world. So, some Chinese guy skis downhill in a half second longer time than some guy in Boulder. We, the world, knows who is the real winner. Maybe we could finally get smart and host the Olympics around the world in different, smaller, less expensive venues.
