interesting to find out that Dazed and Confused by The Yardbirds with Jimmy Page was actually a cover ..
the original by Jake Holmes
the Yardbirds cover .. studio
the Yardbirds cover (live)
Led Zeppelin's studio cover ..
live from The Song remains the same ...
the violin bow was the idea of actor David McCallum's father David McCallum Sr. a concert violinist who knew Page from his early days as a session musician. the story goes .. that while Jeff Beck was still in the Yardbirds along with Page they would take turns trying to out solo each other. Page went first one night and Beck then came out with a Fender Strat strung with piano wire and of course a tremolo bar and in Page's own words "blew him off the stage."
so Page was hanging out with McCallum Sr. brain storming on how to outdo Beck primarily without using a tremolo bar if possible.
McCallum Sr. simply said to Page .. "Why not try a violin bow?"
and gave Page a couple of new bows to try out.
the rest as they say .... is history
might as well post one of the few live recordings of Beck and Page ...
actually an invite performance for the 1966 movie "Blowup"
