Lucas certainly changed the way movies were made but I've always thought of him as more of a producer than a director. American Graffiti was his debut and probably his swan song of directing.
Of course there was the original Star Wars but that was his baby all the way down the line. Writer, executive producer, editor and even the music. I think the only reason he was the director is because no one else knew as much about FX as he did. Hell, I'm not sure he knew that he knew as much as he did. Some of the shit he did on that movie was done on the fly. That's where his genius really was.
