I was in the refinery business many moons ago....I know all about the cost of retro fitting that shit and besides, it is just not feasible to build coal plants when gas prices are what they are.

Yes in fact that is exactly wtf I did...and as anybody in the 80's would know who worked in any related field can tell you, plants close if they continue to not make money, coal can not compete with these low gas prices.

But hey, go build a fucking coal plant or invest in power companies that are predominately coal-based

Coal is a dead end. It is cheaper and faster to build a plant running on natural gas vs coal and it is cheaper to run and maintain. Jobs are being lost to automation so even if there was a surge in coal there would not be a flood of jobs. Instead of getting off their ass and go learn a new trade they sit there waiting for whoever they voted for as president to get their jobs in coal back. Not going to happen

I agree with you big guy. We won't need the coal for power til the gas runs out 50 years from now, or maybe beyond that. If anyone can ever figure out how to make a decent battery, maybe solar will overtake natural gas, but I doubt it.

You shouldn't generalize. Like other energy inputs, coal and natural gas fluctuate greatly in price. There's no guarantee today's cheapest option will remain so tomorrow.

If you're talking about power plants, there are dozens of coal-fired plants up and down the Ohio River and its tributaries. The coal is mined nearby, transported cheaply by river barge, then fed by conveyor belts into the plants. All very efficient and cost-effective. Even if natural gas looks like a better option for new plants (and I hesitate to generalize), the existing coal-fired plants represent sunk costs and their operating expenses are low. If you force these plants to shut down prior to the end of their useful lives (as odumbo's EPA was planning with its ridiculously stringent CO2 mandates), it would not only yield minimal environmental benefit - it would also shutter coal mines and jack up electric rates throughout a region that is already economically depressed.
