Is SXSW a good weekend to visit?

Huh this hasn't been my experience at all. I have met some pretty cool people from around the world already. Seen a few bands that I wouldn't ever get a chance to otherwise. (and Music hasn't even started yet) I haven't seen a mugging yet, and no more drunks in public than any other weekend in Austin. Food prices do seem to up a little but it balances out with all the free drinks.

I think often times people find what they are looking for, so I advise looking for the fun times.

When you book direct with a hotel well in advance you generally don't pay until you arrive. If anything now the hotel staff is happy that they can say "Yes, we have a non-smoking double bed available".

Not sure how long you've been in the village Bob but I've watched this overblown frat party since the days it started as the "Aqua Festival". Nothing I've seen in the last 15+ yrs has impressed me anymore than the crappy NOLA party "Mardis Gras". I have an entirely different attitude about this blow out crap shoot of a party. But with that said, I know a lot of folks like it.. just like any big drunk fest. As for FREE DRINKS, they don't justify putting up with all the hassle.. but I know, that's mainly on me. If I had the power, I'd shut it down. As for the muggins, just follow the news...

Some folks exit Austin during SXSW because they feel SXSW has about outgrown (outgroan?) Austin's capacity.

May I suggest a more "sane" time frame to visit would be the beginning of April. No Fooling!

I think there's more than a few folks who'd love to see you then.

Got it! people gathering in groups and having fun isn't your thing. No worries, it'll be over soon; but then there is ACLfest, FFFfest, Dragfest, etc... Austin is kinda a party town.
