"Austin Justice"
In 1953 UT Economics Professor and former class President Malcolm "Mac" Wallace was found guilty of gunning down the owner of the Peter Pan miniature golf course on Barton Springs Road in front of a dozen witnesses. He walked out of court the same day of his trial's verdict because the Judge was told he wouldn't be allowed to run again if he didn't suspend the sentence.
In the 1990s three men were convicted in Austin for having raped and murdered four teenagers in a Yogurt shop on Anderson Lane without any physical evidence, witnesses, or corroboration of any kind. After years in prison the three defendants were released and not tried again because semen specimens from the victims didn't match any of the those convicted. One of the three defendants was shot in the back and killed last December by an Austin policemen who the defendant believed had been stalking him.
If you are a big name around here you can get off from anything, but if you are just a lowly nobody then the powers that be will blame you if they can't find anyone else. Pretty much the same goes in the statehouse and the courthouses everywhere in this state.
