While there are some words my brain apparently refuses to learn to spell correctly ("accommodations" was spelled three different ways on my website for over a year), overall I'm pretty good at it. When I'm typing, that is. I always lost spelling bees because for the life of me I CAN NOT spell words out loud; I lose my place, forget where I am in the word. Brains are bizarre.

Talk about a lucky break. You said you can't spell out loud, so now you have a gig 'screaming vowels'.

Great Advice for all of us
Riley, thanks for this thread. There are some amazingly wonderful thoughts throughout for everyone who wants to maximize the returns of this community. Guys can learn quite a bit from this discussion as well, methinks. And Carrie, darling, once again I know we are perfect compliments for one another. I cannot type for the life of me, but was the champion of the spelling bee for my hometown four years running. I'll say it and you type it and we will again rule the known universe!
Hugs to all!

As a senior in high school and pre-computers, my parents made (yes, made me) take typing. I thought what for? I'm never going to be a secretary. It turned out to be the most valuable class I ever had.
Now I don't type fast. But I do type as fast as I think. (OK, PJ, RK, DG, ATL & others, I know I've opened myself up with this line, so just try and restrain yourselves.) But I think much faster than I write. So the ideal combination for me is to type what I think.

And this is a new feature of yours?! [insert Jewish New Yorker accent {Alex can relate to it}]
I was in Mrs. Walker's typing class. I can't look away from the keys but I don't hunt and peck either.

This is essentially correct. The trick is to differentiate yourself from the standard hourly provider and prepare for and market yourself to a client with a different set of expectations. Section removed at request of author - JB What do I look for? I look for a thoughtfully prepared and maintained website, low volume (as evidenced by the absence of hourly rates and incall), the presence of other gainful employment (yes - I know you can lie but please, don't) and a track record on a reputable board such as eccie from which I can gauge the intellectual depth and emotional maturity of the individual. In general, I rule out women under age 30. Tastefully executed photos are a plus - at this point, I'm not looking for proof-positive that you are a woman and I question your judgement if you are posting nude photos on the internet. Discretion and trust are crucial. Because I expect to be diligently screened and I will avoid situations where I am not subjected to a reasonable level of scrutiny, I will not give out my information a-priori unless I can be reasonably certain the data will be used only for its intended purpose and promptly destroyed once the screening process is complete. Reviews are of limited importance in my decision process because the common reporting points in the review format are only a part of what I'm looking for. I only arrange appointments while I'm on travel. Therefore, you should reside in or be close to a major business-destination city and focus your advertising accordingly.
