Maybe you haven't visited the area recently... while there are some ghetto complexes, many of them are really nice gated communities. Riverside drive itself is in the midst of a massive new urbanist development craze. And the area near Oltorf is full of moderately upscale (i.e., rent under $900) gated apartment complexes. More importantly, since there are a lot of students in the neighborhood, people don't pay much attention to who comes and goes. A lot of students with mommy and daddy's money and young professionals with short sighted spending habits have really nice cars, so I don't think a luxury car would necessarily be out of place in a moderately upscale gated community near Riverside.
At the end of the day... it can't be had both ways. Since the economy crashed complaining about rates seems to be the Austin community's favorite past time. No provider can maintain her own home, a separate incall at the Domain, and still manage to keep rates low.
