Given the number of great professional photographers, shutterbug hobbyists and cell phone cameras in the world today, it is amazing that ladies use outdated photos.
I can understand if a lady needs to keep her face out of her photos or even a unique tattoo that might compromise her civilian life. . . provided she notes the fact somewhere.
Over the top post processing (airbrushing) is way to common (in every venue), but the really bad stuff can usually be spotted pretty easily (even when the navel is still there!).
I'm sorry you both had an awkward situation. I've met ladies who were not my ideal, but only once considered walking but didn't, that was when I first started the hobby and I would definitely walk if faced with the same situation today.
