It is not a direct democracy where every citizen votes on legislation, but it is misleading to imply that we are not a democracy. We democratically elect our representatives. We have a democratic constitutional republic.

correct, but not a theocracy. there are those who are hoping to change that tho, such as the Texas AG, which is especially and richly ironic..

pyle is also correct. i just read his answer.

you are correct. for state office, it would take a miracle for a Dem to win.

but the statehouse has been sorta bullying the blue cities, which is not very nice imo.
Ok thank you

Yes a constitutional republic who representatives are democratically elected.

But not a democracy.

Article IV of the Constitution, in part:

“The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.”

Madison, in Federalist No. 10, stated that republic refers to a regime "in which a scheme of representation takes place" — in which the people do not themselves assemble for the purpose of making law but instead make law by means of elected representatives. True democracy is where everyone has a direct say in the lawmaking or say, take a vote on every issue or bill. That is done by our elected representatives of the republic.

So the only definition of democracy based on the Greek city state direct democracy and what Madison referred to as true democracy is the only thing that can be called democracy?

When those who seek to govern earn the consent of the governed by the ballot (which is in the constitution) it is democracy. People who think it isn't are welcome to stay home on election day.

Instead of shilling, lets look at the facts. Senfronia Thompson, a houston democrat, brought the bill forward to make prostitution a felony in Texas - making it the only state where it is a felony. As an independent, I can call a spade a spade. They are all in the same gang. Believing in a political party will leave you disappointed every time.

i concur with Pyle. there is direct democracy, like in ancient Athens, and there is representative democracy, which could also be called a republic.

i wonder how long it will be before all porn-protected by the 1st Amendment-will be impossible to view in Texas, unless you have a foreign VPN.

That law needs to be reversed, but who could possibly present that idea to the legislative floor. Could you imagine the pariah that legislator would become. It would need to be stuck deep inside the ass of some heavily pork-barreled bill that on its face was easily bi-partison. God bless Texas and pray for our freedom!

I thought about that - maybe an old legislator who is about to pass along anyway and is paid off - no one else would bring forward. Senfronia - the democrat that introduced the bill - looks like she was last active about 40 years ago.

maybe someone with some balls who can say the truth, which is that voluntary sex work between of age parties should be legalized.

Unfortunately, I know very few politicians like that. The rest are self serving.

Oilman12, its not about the porn. Personally, I don't watch Porn. I just don't like government bureaucrats who think they can legislate morality. The last people I would ever take an ethics course from are our corruptocrats in public office.
