YMMV should never be a factor when that kind of pay is involved. He should show up and be perfect every time as long as the other people on the course have fulfilled their end of the arrangement while he is playing. No excuses.

If my bullshit radar is working, then THN is trying to make a futile attempt with an analogy of the what she says about someone's golf game to a provider in her performance in a session, then
about it. What she fails to realize is that in golf or any other individual pro sport (tennis, bowling, ect.), if you are not performing well, then you DO NOT get the same pay and if it is bad enough, you do not get paid at all, and opposingly comparing that with providers, they DO get the same pay regardless of their performance, so there should be no comparison.
Most individuals will take themselves out of an event/tournament if they feel they cannot perform 100% for any reason, because they know they will not make enough/any money nor have the enjoyment of competing at a high level. Providers should cancel/reschedule if they feel or know they are not going to be able to give at least an honest and solid effort to be at their best in a BCD session. Some do, but most will not because it is easy money.
