Murders new and old keep Baytown police busy

A violent weekend crime spree and the recent capture of a murder suspect who got away two years ago have given the men and women of the Baytown Police Department a lot to think about.
Police believe that three shooting incidents involving one dead woman and three injured people are related.
The first incident occured at approximately 10:30 p.m. July 10 at the Redonda Apartments in the 1000 block of Northwood. When police heard that a shooting victim had arrived at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital's emergency room, it was only the beginning. The 19-year-old man arrived in a private vehicle with a gunshot wound to the neck. He was soon flown by LifeFlight to Memorial Hermann Hospital.
At the same apartment complex just before midnight Sunday, another shooting occurred. When officers responded, they found a 22-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was also taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital via LifeFlight. According to Lt. Eric Freed, both men are still listed as in critical condition.
Between these two incidents, at approximately 11 p.m., another shooting resulted in one death and another injury. At the nearby Trestles Apartments in the 3400 block of Garth Road, police discovered two victims: Ashley Broussard, 21, and an unnamed friend, 15. Both had been shot in the head inside one of the complex's units.
Both victims were transported via LifeFlight to Memorial Hermann Hospital. Broussard, a 2007 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, died of her injuries at the hospital. The 15-year-old girl was listed in stable condition.
On Monday, police took Joseph Dwayne Gibbs, 24, into custody after the police conducted hours of interviews and a brief manhunt. Police spotted Gibbs on Rollingback Drive.
“His name just kept coming up,” Freed said.
Gibbs is a resident of New Orleans and is wanted by Louisiana on another charge of murder.

After six long years, family and friends of Ashley Broussard can rest easier knowing justice was finally served to her killer.
After deliberating for about 90 minutes, a Harris County jury unanimously found 31-year-old Joseph Dwayne Gibbs guilty of capital murder and sentenced him to life in prison without parole.

Houston, TX -
(NBC) - A 4-year-old girl was shot and killed during an attempted carjacking in northwest Houston.
Houston police said the attempted carjacking happened about 2 p.m. Sunday.
Investigators said a family of four was in their car when a man approached with a semiautomatic weapon and demanded the keys.
The father told police he first thought it was a joke. He then said to the man, "Let me get my family out of the car."
Seconds later, shots were fired and the couple's 4-year-old daughter was fatally wounded, detectives said.
Neighbors saw what happened next.
"I saw her mom grab her and said, 'Oh, my baby's shot,'" a witness who did not wish to be identified said.
"It's just my heart goes out to her and, oh my God, I know how she feels. It's just terrible," the witnessed said.
Police said the suspect left without the car.
The parents tried driving to a hospital and flagged down a deputy along the way at Beltway 8 near Veterans Memorial Drive, but their daughter was pronounced dead.
Investigators said the victim's 1-year-old brother was also hurt and was transported to Memorial Hermann in the Texas Medical Center. His condition was not released.
