To the best of my knowledge, Carly's has never said but the fact that she & JT were newlyweds when it was released led to the conclusion she was referring to an "ex" & not him.

Cool

Sisyphus you may be right, but things didn't go well with James either, a few seconds searching and there are way more hints than I thought.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Who_is_the..._Vain%27_about

Stuff that was new to me:

Update

There has been many updates. The letters A, E and R are in the name as clues given away by Simon herself and many other clues have lead to David Bowie. However, there is no 'R' in David Bowie of course. That is until you find out that David Bowie's real name is David Robert Jones.

Although the reference to Nova Scotia (Beatty's Mother from there), Saratoga racing and underworld spies would relate more to Warren Beatty.

UPDATE

I've always thought the song was about Eric Clapton...and all of those letters are in his name, as well, so maybe I'm right. When you listen to the song, it says "you're with an underworld spy, or THE WIFE OF A CLOSE FRIEND...." that was my clue that hit me between the eyes. Eric Clapton wrote "Layla" for the wife of George Harrison, whom he took away from him. And I believe that Carly Simon dated Eric Clapton. So it's only a guess, but I believe that one of the reasons Carly won't give the answer out to the world is to protect Clapton, who's had a lot of sadness in his life, and who has turned his life around since that song was popular.

Yeah, that's true that apparently she found him to be no "Sweet Baby James"...

But, the timing of that revelation works against him being the subject of "You're So Vain"

Saw all of the clues that pointed towards WB & just figured case closed. Occam's Razor & all that... Hadn't heard any of the other theories. I suppose it could actually be about EVERY egotistical jackass she ever got involved with.

But, more importantly, who knew the Father was such a font of musical wisdom?? Aahhh.... I suppose I should have. For I do know the Father to be the voice of authority concerning those ladies who like to get around!!!

I suppose a trip to the Confessional is in order...

It is always better to be thrown down by your friends than by your enemas.

LD, by expressing their irritation they increase my amusement. By their spite, they prove the point regards friends and enemies (aka enemas, something which works by design within the confines of the colon, and produces pot loads of shit, which bears a striking resemblance to their opinions and retorts).

I seek information and the detractors seek to defame and inflame. But the joke is on them, which is the point. But that point is on a plane above their heads, and they do not realize it; which makes it funnier.

Enemies? I have none here. This is all a fantasy . . .

Besides which, rumor has it that rr will not be around much longer (there he goes with 3rd person again).
