Ya the energy to mine issue comes up often. However for all the Bitcoin mining that is done, the energy used is about half of what the overall banking industry consumes. It used to be way less than half, I'll have to do more research on that.

Also, Bitcoin mining consumes roughly 0.5% of all energy consumption worldwide. Bitcoin miners are always looking for "green" ways to decrease energy use and mining hardware is getting more powerful per hash rate.
