Felicity, while I agree with your sentiment, just to play devil's advocate, I think you need to draw a distinction between doing what you want with your body and doing that for money. The law doesn't say that you can't do as you want, it says you can't charge for it. You can please as many of us as you want for free.

Oh, come on. Even this sentiment is bullshit (no offense to you personally).
The 'problem' is that pussy is the only thing you 'sell' that you (that would be the women) get to keep. When you sell your body (this is a better way of putting it, I suppose), i.e. for the sexual satisfaction of others, you still have sole possession of your own body. In the meantime, you still get cold, hard cash, or some form of monetary payment (cards, wire, etc).
For those in power, there's no favorable way for them to deal with this. Even if an escort had to report her income, it's still rightly difficult to accurately determine how much she makes. She can report whatever the hell she wants. For example, she can say, I saw two guys today. And, she can say, she only saw them for an hour. She can put in the books that she was paid for 2 hours. But, what if both clients paid her for 3 hours each?? That's 4 hours of 'unreported' income.
I surmise that this drives escort hating authority types up the wall. I don't know why, exactly. Why should anyone care, really? Two consenting, legal age adults should be able to do what they want, within the lines of the general bounds of undo harm to others...i.e. a man and a woman agreeing to fuck IS NOT HURTING ANYONE ELSE.
Prostitution DOES NOT have to be illegal. It is a manmade law that is in existence to impose on free will.
Of course, all laws are 'man made', in a sense that general guidelines of humanity determine should be legal and illegal. Things like rape, murder, assault, theft are pretty much universally agreed upon of things that you can't legally do to other people. Money or no money, the above are things you CANNOT do to other people.
Consensual sex with another adult? Sure, go right ahead. Oh, you wanna involve money in that process?? Ohhh, no no no no!! Wait, wait, wait, wait, waaaaaiiit a minute here!!!
Thinking the whole thing out loud is just as silly as it can be when you really think about it.
