If people don't know (yeah, I crack myself up) the subpoenaed transfer was the third, let's say request. Trump was given two chances to turn over everything voluntarily and did send something the prior two times . They tried to get a lower level lawyer partner to sign off that all documents had been turned over, lucky for her she reused until they put a - best of my knowledge line before she would sign. It's rumored that it was someone in Trump's inner circle that blew thew whistle for this last third tranche.
The law is very specific that Presidents, once out of office can't take top secret documents, of any level to their residence. To let any President get away with skirting this would be a bad precedence. Now I feel the need to point out that what would be done, if anything, is another subject.
One interesting comment came from Bolton. Under the freedom of information act unclassified/declassified documents can be released (most likely w/redactions) and someone should sue for that to happen. I don't think Trump would like that.
