The wood on the tanks is there to throw under the threads in mud or on soft ground to keep the tank from getting mired.
There is never nothing available when and where you need it so you bring your own, you own a tank you can do that.
And if a log causes a RPG to pre-detonate before it encounters your armor so much the better.
How much difference that would make who knows?
