I was given a gift by a provider whose gift giving turned out to be a hook, a manner of getting my guard down. She said as much. It very well could have been a unique circumstance, how things went bad could have been for other reasons, but were it to happen again I would consider myself foolish to not expect the same result. I think if I find myself wanting to bring a lady anything more valueable than a soda pop, I will hopefully conclude that my mind might be outside the realm of healthy hobbying.

Johnny, I'm really sorry that happened to you. That is not the point of gift giving, and I think doing that kind of thing, especially in this business, is completely inappropriate.

Most of us, however, are just normal people, and a gift means nothing more than what it is. A simple, friendly gesture. We aren't going to hope for all that off a candy bar ;-)

Bottom Line. I CHOOSE to get a gift or gifts for selected providers I see. I do it NOT for anything I might get in return from the lady, but because of how it makes ME feel. I like the feeling of anticipation and the little glow of satisfaction I get because she likes the gift I brought. I don't do this for all providers I see and I don't even do it every time for those providers I get small gifts for occasionally. There are no "expectations" on either side, and I mostly do it for my own satisfaction.

If I know it's someone's birthday, I stop by Starbucks and grab a cake pop.. Or a cupcake or something somewhere.. I went on a vacation once and brought back something for someone that I saw repeatedly...

Like someone else mentioned.. Some people just like to give gifts. Some people are gracious about receiving and giving. The people that want something in return from giving a gift don't really understand what giving is all about.

For the entire month of November for every person that I meet I donate a toy to children in need.

That's just how I am.

I love to give my dates chocolate to take home afterwards. Even when I go to a date I bring chocolate or a bottle of wine. If they have a P411 account I like to see what they're beverage of choice is and try to have it on hand for our date. I love the look on my dates face (when his beverage of choice is something different... like juice) when he arrives and sees his out of the ordinary request readily available.

There is a word and custom from New Orleans that places small gifts in the proper context. A lagniappe (/ˈlænjæp/ LAN-yap) is a small gift given to a customer by a merchant at the time of a purchase (such as a 13th doughnut when buying a dozen), or more broadly, "something given or obtained gratuitously or by way of good measure."

Monk Rasputin of Austin often brings his dates lagniappes, and I have followed his lead. By definition they are low cost and are merely an expression of thanks. It that bothers some, so be it, but in my experience these little gifts are remembered, appreciated and rewarded in subtle but tangible ways.

No need to hear from the insurgent trolls: we awl know what you think and could not care less for your dyspeptic clutter.

Honest in this case? What label is applied should be applied to the wusses that defend such actions? I prefer "Wuss"

I just think we all have different ways of enjoying ourselves, and showing our appreciation of a good time. At the end of the day, it's not really about what anyone else does, is it?
It can be as it modifies expectations. You seem to have a good grip on your business darlin....

So when the newbie shows up at the door with his envelope that includes a tip, a dozen roses, a bottle of cologne and your favorite candy how do you bring him back to reality?

So does it take the brunt off the after session reality that you just had to pay $300 to get laid in some manner? Please expand a bit...

Monk Rasputin of Austin often brings his dates lagniappes, No.... He is NOT the merchant..... Your rather fancy explanation has no bearing on Mr. Monk...

Well..... There are others that need to hear both sides of the subject..... Not just the wussy side....

and come on....."dyspeptic clutter" ????

Find better big words to try to sound important please. you use niether in the proper manner to convey your point.

The observation I make is that a lagniappe, as you describe it, goes from merchant to vendor, as a thanks for the patronage. What you describe for the hobby goes the other way.

Not sure if pointing that out makes me an insurgent troll. But, along the lines of what you describe in the hobby, were a customer to give the baker the twelfth donut, as a token of appreciation, what would we call the purchase of the eleven donuts? A policeman's dozen?

now that's nothing but fantasy my friend. No reputable police officer is giving away a donut!

Surprising comment from one who has gone to great lengths to disparage name calling. Remember: He Wins! when someone calls him fat. (BTW: someone needs to tell that "new" chick in Austin - and I suspect she's just getting warmed up.)

So, by your own rules: FAIL.

You didn't read the second, broader, definition: "something given or obtained gratuitously or by way of good measure."

That meaning applies to small gifts given to providers "gratuitously or by way of good measure." The first meaning would apply to gifts or favors given by providers to mongers, such as going over time by ten or more minutes.

And I see that more inveterate trolls are converging on this thread, not happy to limit their suspect charms to regional forums. Lucky us.

Yes... Lucky You......

Still Looking and I do requests.... When an area of the board gets a little dull.... Someone shines a Troll Light into the night sky and Still Looking gets a hard-on and hits the keyboard...... As soon as he expends his first load, realizing his target is still unsatisfied he calls in others to deliver load upon load upon load until the community in inundated.....

That's what happened here I think...

Me? I just woke up, saw and email that my presence was needed in a thread here....

We do our part to help bandwidth.....

I never knew this place existed.....

Looks like some fun can be had!
