I don't know how many people are in the same types of job as me, but I make my living in I.T., a field that would not exist except for government spending on emerging technologies back before computers became commercially viable.
Gates and Ballmer, Jobs and Wozniak, none of them could have done any of their work except for decades of foregoing unprofitable development funded by the government. These things take time, but countries that don't do them end up out in the cold sooner or later.
Even Page and Brin's search engine was developed while they attended a federally-funded graduate program at a state college. Without new technologies in the pipeline and without the education system to sustain them in the USA, where will the next generation of hobbyists come from? I bet not many regular gents earn hobby money while wearing paper hats.

The hobby will always exist and the money spent will be relative to the money earned. If too throw the fuel dried up and the lights went out and we were all tilling land to hopefully eat all winter a handy might cost a stick of butter and two eggs.
Personally I'd far prefer that then government money financing the wealth of Jobs, Ballmer, Gates and the likes. The preceding poster is well spoken and is absolutely right that investment in growth, improvement and experimentation are essential. But men that get as wealthy as the aforementioned abuse their fellow men.

The Upstate NY economy is in pretty rough shape. We only hear a small amount of the data. Albany can run whatever commercials they want but the reality of it speaks louder.

I'm a low volume provider (a lot lower than most, I will admit) and haven't been in the business as long as some, but I haven't seen much of a difference. Most weeks I still get appointments without having to advertise and that's a fabulous sign for me ![Smile](https://cdn-w.eccie.net/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Perhaps more "busts" in the area have something to do with clients dropping off as well as the faltering economy?
Just my two cents...

Not referring to myself, I surmise that hobbyists as a group might be less affected by economic downturns than the general male population. My reasoning is that this hobby is a relatively expensive one, and those who partake in it are likely to have more disposable income and financial stability than others.

I believe you are onto something, the busts and economy haven't really affected business at all.

My US biz is a bit lower, but the Can side of things balances it out! Last year I would have been very slow without US biz.
Funny somedays it seems all US, and other days all Canadians.
The prices are very low here and competitive, YET.. I have been running specials and 8 out of 10 are still giving my regular rate, by their own choice.
I wonder if the border is becoming more of an issue on this side verses ecconomy ..
Tons of new faces too ..with fakes also..
Where there's a will there's a way..no rest for the wick..err.. horny!

There sure are a lot of new faces and fakes/scammers on Niagara BP lately. Makes you wonder if business is down, what is attracting them all?

From a newbie's perspective, I can tell you that it's difficult for a newbie to get in to the hobby. If it's true that there is an increase in SPs, this creates an imbalance. More supply without a corresponding increase in demand. Just sayin'.
