Javiers reminds me of La Valentina in Mexico City, not the dishes served, but more in that it is about the experience than the actual food. I like Javiers but if I was hungry and just wanted to eat I would go to Fuel city, Tacos, elote and a Jarritos or Mexican coke.
I have been going to El Ranchito for more than 20 years and it used to be that you better be able to order in Spanish on the weekends, because no one would be speaking English.
There is also a place in the mall off 35 in Fort Worth, la Salsarita I think is the name, decent tacos if you find yourself near there.

Texaco @ I-35 and Inwood also.

Of course, they lack the simple things like tables.

And the little wagon out front with the corn in the cup..........OMG that and the tacos goooood stuff!!!!!!!!!!!

For street tacos - El Se Hey on Davis and Cedar Hill. In Oak Cliff by Bishop Arts District. All the Hispanic's, and local LE eat there.

Yes Lola- Mi Cocina is just tex mex.. Pretty much slop but it is good.. All the places named here are good in fact.. yes if you want upscale Komali and Javier's is a Dallas institution... Very good privately owned and generations of the same families have worked there.. The cigar bar( don't smoke me anymore) there is also fun for drinks after and can be a good scene- be forewarned you might not leave alone!!!

La Calle Doce is a really good place...if you like mexican seafood. Their cod soup gets many good reviews, but their tortilla soup is the first one that I really enjoyed. Full of flavor, not just cloudy water.

The real "down home" mexican cooking that's going to be close to what your looking for is probably only going to be found in the taquerias - Taqueria San Luis is my favorite (the best torta de pastor I've ever tasted). All the restaurants are going to have tex-mex. My favorites of those are Mercado Juarez, Esperanza's and La Playa Maya. I do like Gloria's but it's more El Salvadorian. The places I cannot stand for the life of me are Joe T's, Chuy's, Los Vaqueros and Mexican Inn. The military should issue an air strike against Mexican Inn, ugh.

Mexican Inn is still around? The grease accrued on the table is so thick that it looks like each one is covered with the wax of about 1,000 Confirmation candles.

Esperanza's in its heyday would serve traditional Mexican food at lunch along with goodies from the Panaderia, but admittedly it has been years so that apparently has changed too. It sucks that the years ellapse as they do.

Yup, at least in Fort Worth Mexican Inn is still around. There are 2 of them that I know of, one on Henderson (right before entering downtown) and the other is on Camp Bowie (this is the larger one).

Admittedly I only ever go to Esperanza's for brunch on Sunday with the rents after church (love the chorizo con huevo). I think I've only ever had something from their lunch menu a couple of times. I think there panaderia is pretty good but I have the habit of getting the same thing every time.

My top three are in no particular order :

1.) Mia's Tex Mex (Lemmon Ave.-Dallas)
2.) Manny's Uptown (Lemmon Ave. and Oak Grove- Dallas)
3.) Fuel City Tacos ( Riverfront and I-35 - Dallas)
