One of my favorites on 6th street, funky Old Austin Style steakhouse, Hoffbrau Steaks, great prices, great steaks, great atmosphere. Been around since the 1930's I think. http://originalhoffbrausteaks.com
The only complaint I have about these Food Threads is, dammit, now I am HUNGRY!lol

They make me hungry too : ) Sat night dinner, where oh where?
I forgot, there is a Gumbos downtown too on Colorado or
Lavaca I think.
I had heard how good the food was at the Hoffbrau
house from a couple of fellas so I checked it out a
few years back! Me, little black dress and heels all
done up. My date nicely dressed walked into what
looked like Mel's diner. Oops, should have done a
drive by first. I don't care for tbones or strip steaks
but the salad was fantastic!

Damn! So much good information I don't know where to start eating. Thanks for the input everyone and if you think of any other places, post it.
The Frisco on Burnet Rd has killer CFS! The pies look tasty too.
Hoover's by 35 is also pretty good.

Another casual cajun place is
Shoal Creek Saloon on Lamar near 9th street.
I believe there are a few over in East Austin too.

Try the chopped steaks at the Frisco Shop. Been going there for years and years at the old location, really miss the Nighthawk Steakhouse; and really love the Anchovie salad dressing at the Frisco shop.
I guess I tend to gravitate to the old diner style steakhouses....

Eddie V's is the only place in town that sells Prime meat AND dry aged from out of Chicago. Pricey but worth it...wouldn't shop any other place.

I've had those, they're good. I've also had the microwavable one's they sell at HEB. Didn't see much of a difference in taste.
How about the burgers at Ski Shores? I hear they're awesome.

Trulucks is good for fish, great for Crab, great for a narrow selection of steak cuts. Low atmosphere, but great seafood is Quality Seafood already mentioned. If you KNOW cajun cooking, avoid Pappadeaux's (with the exception of Oyster Bar). If you aren't intimate with real cajun cooking, it'll be ok. Gumbo's better and new location in Lakeway at 620/71. Fishdaddy's in P'ville on 35 near Wells Branch, decent fish, pass on the shellfish. Great steak??? Steiner Steakhouse best I've found recently, but Austin is meat plenty, put Prime Cut poor!

Sadly, Ski shores closed last year.
LOL about the Frisco/Nighthawk chopped steaks. If you eat at Frisco, IMO, the Filet mignon is pretty good, at $18. the other steaks are not so great.
I'm going to finally have to try Hofbrau. I wonder why I've always driven by?

Crystal, ski shores is open again, I checked their website. I was bummed last year when they shut down. Happy to see them open again.

III Forks has great steaks, and they rarely mess them up in my experience. I've had worse luck at Ruth Chris, Flemings, Sullivan's, etc.

Ski shores is open, and partially remodeled.
Forgot about Roaring Fork. Good steak! Try the new location on Quarry Lake off Braker. You gotta know it's there to find it. Great outside seating areas, and large bar as well. Lunch there will ruin your work afternoon.

Houston's at corner of Burnet and Anderson lane - Hawiian steak (not on the the menu) w/ a loaded baked potato is hard to beat. Around $35 per plate.
But if you like your steak so tender that a knife is not necessary, try Ruth Chris's on the Drag and 31st. Around $50 per plate.

Another place that has killer gumbo is Sambets Cajun Kitchen & Grocery at 183 & McNeil in a strip center. It's all I ever get there becuse it's so good, but the other stuff I've seen there looks really good as well.

I will second the opinions of a lot of people in here:
Cajun - I like the atmosphere of Gumbos downtown a lot, the high ceilings and white table clothes, the food is pretty good, too. They will take any piece of fish and throw a cream sauce with crawfish over it and its pretty fking good. Sambett's off 183 up north is a fantastic little hole in the wall. Love the chicken and sausage gumbo there. Do not eat at papppadeaux. Its a chain and everytime I go its been average at best.
Steaks - I personally like Ruth Chris. The steak comes out buttery and hot. Its pretty great. Sullivan's has a nice business lunch special. The prime rib sandwich at Bartlett's (formerly Houston's) is really really good. Also that argentine restaurant on the eastsidde buenas aires has a nice steak sandhich (and fantastic empanadas). Avoid Hoffbrau house, a friend drug me there once in a this is a cool old funky place and all I could think was if I wanted a shitty steak cooked this way I could have done it in a pan at my house with better atmosphere.
Also - although its not a seafood place - the ceviche at polvo's always makes dates happy.
