Have no idea how fast they went. Not very fast by todays standards. If you're interested in that era of racing may I suggest Gentlemen Start Your Engines by Wilber Shaw . It's avalable thru Amazon.com.

Ah yes, Wilbur Shaw was a three time winner if the Indy 500. 1937, 1939 and 1940. Later he went on to Firestone to develop synthetic rubber for tires and tested them at the speedway. He was instrumental in saving the speedway from certain death by convincing Tony Hulman to buy it and thus return it to its splendor. Hulman made Shaw the president of the speedway and the rest, as it is said, is history.
As to how fast they went when racing on the beach I do not remember. However, I do know that land speed records were set at that location before they were doing that sort of thing at the Bonneville Salt flats.

Never got into to watching car racing, just not my cup of tea. As a child growing up I can recall watching the Pittsburgh Steelers with Bradshaw, Swann, Mean Joe Greene and company. Watching the Super Bowl with family and friends have always been the best times ever!

I have to admit I was very surprised by one person's answer to this survey and hope you don't mind me asking, Mr. Manster711, why you chose NASCAR over football when your handle is football-related? I have big love for Randy White (half-man/half-monster = Manster) and can even remember watching him and Harvey Martin share MVP honors in 1978 when the Cowboys flattened the "Orange Crush," Denver Broncos...so why NASCAR?

Ms. Lovely Lexi, like you I am a big Dallas Cowboy fan. Unfortunately it has been quite a while since our Boys last played in a Superbowl game. So watching the Superbowl the last few years was been anti-climatic for me especially knowing that we had beat the Arizona is Jason Garrett hadn't called that time out as we were making that field goal that would have gotten us into the playoffs. Then us missing second field after Giants called time out on field goal that would have tied Giants game. I still watched every single playoff game knowing its going to be a long off season especially since the Cowboys training camp will be in California instead of here in San Antonio this August.
I miss Randy, Harvey and Too Tall days along with the Triplet days. Sad part is we are wasting Tony R., Jason W., Demarus W., prime years by having such a lousy GM (Jerry Jones). I know he really wants to win but he needs to let go of that ego and get someone that can pick some real talent. As for me, 3 of my vehicles have Cowboy plates and my Handle and Logo promote my Fav Cowboys so I have to defend them year round. As for NASCAR I long for the days of real racing with the likes and attitude of Dale Earnhardt senior. Need something to hold me till start of football season, golf won't do it. I love that such a lovely lady like yourself is a big Cowboy fan. We going to need to get together to pull our resources for our Cowboys. : )
I guarantee that the next time the Cowboys make it to the Superbowl I will be there.

And I loved your comments on NASCAR! I must admit, however, I did watch last year's Daytona 500 - by accident. Found myself in a restaurant bar with a friend/fan and the race was on. After I stopped "b$tch$ng," I learned about "drafting" & more. My friend is big Jeff Gordon fan and, not one to jump on a bandwagon, went with an underdog, named Trevor-something - the Winner!! Now would I watch again? Probably not - unless fn a bar with a ice cold Miller Lite in front of me and fans around me.
Now to our favorite - Dallas Cowboys! Randy White is one of my all-time favs, too! One of my favorite memories of him is when he was going through his big contract negotiation. Everyone was sweating whether he would be signed before training camp. Local sportscasters were stirring the pot, getting everyone in a frenzy - every one but Randy. A news crew found him out on a lake fishing during the entire process...not a care in the world. Love that man!

Manster!! Have much to say in response but suffice it to say, for now, I 100% agree with you. Since Jerry's ego is so large, I think he should have his family commit him "involuntarily" (wink/wink) to an insane asylum, where, if he were still living, Al Davis, could be his roomie! Or how about he fake his own death? Hell, another plastic surgery disaster like before and no one would recognize him anyway!!
Heading south to SA, so need to run and get on the road but let me just say, I loved Too Tall (glad he realized he wasn't a boxer & returned to the fold) and Harvey Martin and even Hollywood Henderson, for making Tom's face change expressions...LOL. OHHH! Another good topic - Tom's stone-like exterior. I have two picks for most memorable moments when Tom Landry's face conveyed emotion...First, a happy moment - When he broke out in huge smile as the players lifted him on their shoulders after winning the Super Bowl (was it the first one against Miami or Denver?) and the second, a VERY SAD moment, when Danny White effectively killed the Landry era. Do not remember all particulars but do know Danny called an audible at the line changing the play Landry had called on a must-win game...as soon as the ball was snapped and Landry saw what was happening, he screamed out, "NO, Danny, NO!!!" But alas, it was too late and I believe Danny's ass was sacked. And yes, I did cry when Landry was fired:-)
Love to talk football and my knowledge does extend past the Cowboys...but would like to block out Chuck Knoll's Steelers and the dropped pass by Jackie (whats-his-name) TE for Cowboys on 3rd down touchdown play that would have turned the STEEL curtain back or the fact that Joe Montana was throwing the ball away and Dwight Clark is the luckiest SOB on the planet...
Take care!

Ha, thanks. There's nothing wrong with admitting that you've watched it. I have a number of friends that are involved in a HUGE fantasy NASCAR league, and I'll go to the bar and play darts or electronic golf with some of the less avid fans that only care about how their drivers finish.
I've heard many stories about how laid back he was off the field, but not that one, thanks for sharing!
Your reply to manster was spot on about Landry and the Steelers... Landry was one of the classiest coaches to ever grace the field! As for the Steelers, I hate that they have more championships than Dallas, hopefully they can catch back up. I was real happy to see denver knock them out of the playoffs this year...
Lastly, that S.O.B. Jackie's last name is Harris, I'll never be able to forget that drop! I have to give props to Montana and Clark though, they were a great tandem.
Safe travels ma'am
