The government should always have an outside source checking their spending. Fact that this isn't already happening is part of why the debt is so high.

Most politicians have no clue what our day looks like. Someone drives them, they buy their food, clean their houses, take out their trash, accountants pay their bills. they probably all buy bidets so they don't have to wipe their own asses.
