My gram watched Hee Haw, I spent alot of time with her, and watched it, I agree, Roy Clark was good, I think Hendrix was one of the best, even though I am supposed to be a racist, I'll put up Robin Trower as one of my other favorites.
I am also a fan of bass players, can't name a name, but the bassist in Nilsons Jump into the fire was great.
i'm well aware of Roy Clark's rep with "rock" guitar players. he was vastly underrated because he mostly played country. in the clip you posted he's playing 6 string Spanish guitar. Andrés Segovia would certainly approve but there are 50 other classical virtuosos who could play that just as well.
and you got the wrong jimmy .. the greatest guitar player of all time is James Patrick Page, who inspired a young Eddie Van Halen to take Jimmy's fret picking to what became his "hammer on" technique which Page was quite complementary of.
Eddie claimed Jimmy was "Sloppy" when playing live.
problem is ... so was Eddie and even worse. having seen both .. yes BOTH in their prime they both were sloppy at times. why? Jimmy had a "H" problem that did affect his playing live. Eddie was a drunk. the last time i saw VH was 1985 and never .. ever .. would even consider seeing them again. having seen VH in 1978 when they were smoking it .. then to watch Diamond Dave lose it on Eddie for being so drunk he was literally falling down on stage .. Eddie ain't got shit to say about Jimmy being sloppy.
Eddie being drunk all the time is one of the reasons Dave left the band. and the musical direction which thanks in part to the Red Rocker Sammy Hagar Eddie was vindicated on that .. but both Diamond Dave and Sammy found out the hard why it was really the Van Halen brother's band.
as an aside .. another guitar great .. no so much in my opinion but is always in the discussion like Larry Bird and Mikey Jordan .. Eric "Slow Hand" Clapton, had the same "H" problem as Jimmy. it's WHY they called him "slow hand".
so let's go to the tale of the tape .. or in this case the video.
first .. Eddie when he's on .. best VH song EVER. one of the best opening riffs ever.
now Mr Page live playing a layered song, meaning in the studio as Eddie pointed out, was an overdubbed multi layer track. here he is playing it live and many "experts" say is next to impossible to do. yet he does. unfortunately this was Knebworth and the last ever live recorded show of Led Zeppelin before John Henry Bonham died.
compare to the studio version where Page could lay down multiple guitar tracks ...
RIP John Henry Bonham
now a little something from "slowhand" Clapton who i consider overrated .. yes he's overrated. but he is still pretty damn good .. one hell of a song ..
now the other Jimmy .. er Jimi ... but first the original ..
by a no talent punk named Robert Allen Zimmerman. you may know him as Bob Dylan ..
remember this song was originally a FOLK song ...
now let's see what Mr Hendrix does with it ...
it should be noted that Jimi also had a second guitar player doing an acoustic riff in the studio .. it's hard to hear but it's there ..
none other that the legendary Eddie Kramer .. who worked extensively with .. EVERYONE in rock, Led Zep, Jimi, EVERYONE, breaks it down.
the acoustic guitar on "All Along the Watchtower" ... none other than the very accomplished in his own right Dave Mason!
now a redo with John Paul Jones and an all star cast for "Playing for Change"
now here's another underrated guitar player .. and an egotistic pompous asshole .. pete townshend
he hates Led Zeppelin's music .. here is why
bahahhaaa ego in rock. who knew???
remember .. all these bands in the 60's and 70's heyday .. knew each other well. the Beatles, the Stones, the WHO, Clapton, Hendrix, they all partied together.
here's George Harrison in late 1969 hearing about some upstart band .. Led Zeppelin.
Townshend thought the Who should succeed the Beatles as the biggest rock act after they quit. the Stones .. Mick and Keith might have also had something to say about that .. but Led Zeppelin became the biggest band of the 70's.
here is the underrated Pete Townshend doing what he really does best .. not play guitar .. write songs only Roger Daltrey can sing..
Jimmy Page and believe or not….Prince. YouTube his “my guitar gently weeps”. It’s incredible.
I didn't realize what a phenomenal guitar player Prince was until after his passing. all the glam and flash had me mostly ignore his music, but he was a great guitar player.
EVH will forever be tops in my heart.
Yngwie plays fast. Does that make him good? I question it. I get the sentiment, but that doesn't make him good IMO.
