You keep saying this, but I wear my MAGA hat every day. I have only had one negative comment so far. Must be a serious shortage of snowflakes around here.

There's an interesting debate amongst Democrats that is not dissimilar to the debate happening among Republicans. Democrats are discussing and debating the value of far-lefty values and their place in our country. The Republicans are also dealing with radical elements -their own radical right- and those elements control their party right now. Trump's approach to government is "radical" in the opinion of most knowledgeable observers. I am in that camp. Radical is when you distrust your own security experts and trust a foreign opinion. Radical is when you despise the very form of government that supports the society you believe in. Radical is describing the mainstream media as the enemy of the people. Radical is arranging massive tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans when there is a grassroots war over income inequality. So, the Republicans are already leaning to their right-most radical elements. Will the Democrats do the same? Radical -it seems- is the sign of this time. I advise the Democrats to select wisely, and to avoid radical viewpoints. Our society will not fare well if the Democrats win and the social pendulum moves too far left. That would be a rapid and dramatic swing.

The tax cut for corporations was long overdue, as our corporate tax rate was way out of whack with other countries and discouraging investment and thus economic growth and job creation. Obama wanted to cut the corporate rate to 27% or 28%, and Trump and the Republicans cut to 20%.

As to wealthy Americans, the Republican tax cuts helped small businessmen with pass-through entities, and larger businesses with large depreciation deductions relative to income (for example, businesses that own rental real estate like the Trump organization) and with high labor costs relative to income. I don't like the way they did this, playing favorites.

The big picture, the U.S. tax system is the most progressive system in the developed world. Higher income Americans pay a higher share of their income compared to others than in any other developed country in the world.

The Democratic Party is obsessed with raising taxes on higher earners, basically to make everyone poorer and more equal. Instead it should be concentrating on raising up those who aren't high earners. Improving education, lowering health care costs, and efficiently targeting aid to disadvantaged children and single mothers would be a good start.

I would be interested in hearing more about this. Is the U.S. really the most progressive system in the world? I thought France, Sweden, or South Africa would be higher than the U.S.

Is there any studies or documentation you can link to to support this position.

you need to factor federal, state & local taxes in comparision to Europe.

Europe's taxes are higher but are not necessarily progressive.

a little bit dated from 2015.

So you're proud about intimidating people from exercising their first amendment right...very unAmerican of you TM...you seem afraid of others voicing or displaying their beliefs because you disagree with them.
I never stop ANYONE from voicing or displaying their beliefs...wrong or right.
I though you were from the tolerant left...guess not.

Txdot, Dilbert's link above gives a good explanation.

If you want something a bit more technical, and definitely not biased toward the right, look at Whiteford's comments and table, quoted here:

http://gregmankiw.blogspot.com/2011/...ssive-tax.html

Mankiw, who writes the blog, may be right of center, but Whiteford, who did the research for the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development, has a left of center bias. The big reason the Europeans aren't as progressive in terms of taxation is they have large value added taxes (VAT's). These are like sales taxes. VAT's are regressive taxes that hit the poor and middle class harder than the well off.

You could make the argument that the Trump tax cuts negate this. You'd be wrong. First, since Whiteford's work, the Bush tax cuts were done away with by Obama. That made the system in the USA a bit more progressive. And with respect to the Trump tax cuts, while yes, they helped certain special interests, they otherwise didn't make much of a difference, as the tax cuts for individuals' rates were so small.

You're wrong bb. That seems to be a habit with Trump supporters. I applauded biggeo for wearing his hat. Im just pointing out that here in the 5th largest metropolitan area in the country the Trump fans are scardy cats. I never see MAGA hats. The people who support Trump here don't do so openly. They are scardy cats. I openly supported Obama and had /have a picture of him in my office. Scardy cats. I think they are embarrassed because they know that Trump and the Bible are hard to defend together
