If the infection is recurrent, then the antibiotics are not effective in eliminating the infection 100%. So all you do when you take a course of the antibiotic is wipe out the weaker bacteria, while leaving behind the stronger bacteria and enabling the heartier strains to proliferate.
Not only does taking the same antibiotic over and over again not work, you are making the problem far worse.
You need to see a dentist sooner rather than later. Trust me on this. I just got home from a consult with an oral surgeon, and I'm scheduled for oral surgery on Monday. This is a follow up to an infection that began nearly 2 years ago. I can't remember being in this much pain in my life, and I was pretty much ready to sell the surgeon my soul if only he would do the surgery right then and there. The idea of having to wait through the weekend really sucks.
For a tooth infection, the initial dental exam should run you around $50-70, and a single tooth extraction could cost as little as $50-100. The dentist will probably want an x-ray before he pulls a tooth, but a panoramic only costs around $150. Total cost for an exam, x-ray, and extraction would likely be around $300 or so. The cost of resolving your problem may not be cheap, but it is worth it a thousand times over.
Or you could put it off like I have, and now I'm looking at probably 2 weeks of recovery during which I can't work. This thucks and not in a good way!
