Having a European passport doesn't necessarily mean he's a citizen of a country in the EU ... Do you not know a U.S. citizen with passports from other countries? Or citizens from other countries with passports from countries other than their country of birth? If anyone does any short-notice trips overseas they are handy to have to conveniently move about without a lot of delays and questions. It "helps" on the flight manifest as well.
