I've seen quite a few times where a bit of quick internet sleuthing will turn up personal details of a girl who advertises on BP or Eccie. If I can do it, so can anyone else. Try to keep that in mind to stay safe.
Another note, I never allow the "remember me" input.

Do not let facebook access your Address Book, ever. I have had messages from 6 female friends trying to get me to buy something I don't need from Canada Pharmacies because their address books were raided.

I addition, for your next computer, get a Mac. Forget the added expense, the extra money spent will come back to you when you get the courage to trash the damn Microsoft. The reason that the virus still can enter your machine (hardly any can get to a Mac, and those do show on a Mac are usually on Microsoft software such as Microsoft Word) is because Microsoft programs can be reached from the operating system of the machine; Mac programs stand alone, independent of the operating system.

Microsoft is just not worth the worry. I have Microsoft operating systems on 4 or 5 of my machines, but those machines stand alone (cheap and dedicated for individual tasks): they are not connected to the net.

This is good info. Thanks! I didn't realize google had those disadvantages. I'm using it now, but I'll switch to Yahoo. I'm also about to pull the trigger on my first Mac, primarily for the reasons you mention. I do have one question maybe you can answer. I often use the InPrivate browsing in Internet Explorer. That way, cookies aren't stored beyond the session and the browsing history doesn't show up. Does the Mac browser, Safari, have a similar option or is it necessary to clear history constantly?

Yes! With Safari open, click on the word Safari (Next to the Apple in the header), hold open with the mouse, scroll down to private browsing to open another window for setting.

I don't have one thing figured out yet. I have a couple of security programs on several machines, both Mac and Windows: I have both programs set to display an alarm when the word "Bank" or "Bank Name" comes up. Safari, does trip the alarm that a request for bank name has been made. Even though this is curious, I don't think the bank name can be accessed. Just to be sure, I have downloaded another web surfer, I use Camino - it is free. The idea was in an article in MacWorld: always use a separate web surfer, just for banking; and I extend that to a separate web surfer just for the hobby; there are a lot of free surfers available.

Just a note with Yahoo, if you have ever looked at the headers in an e-mail you will note that yes it shows it came from a Yahoo server, but it also shows the computer that connected to the Yahoo server. Send an e-mail to yourself and look at the properties on the e-mail, you'll see both not that most people would ever look at the properties section anyway. If you want to be secure on that only access your hobby mail from a proxy server or use someone's free wi-fi.

Thank you. I use proxy servers; I forgot to mention it.
