Here's what should have happened idiot EVA.

The US military and intelligence community would have gotten the goods on ISIS months ago.
The US military would have launched a rescue effort at the same time that it launched an attack on the ISIS command and control structure.
The US military could have captured some ISIS commanders (and killed others) in case the rescue effort failed. We would have some of our own hostages. (lets call a spade a spade)
The US military would have pursued the ISIS leadership into Syria if necessary.
The US military would have destroyed all of the captured equipment stationed in Syria now (tanks, apcs, artillery, hummvees, etc.
If the hostages are successfully rescued they will be delivered to their families and the people involved will never be known for say five years. The White House will refuse to talk about the operation and will give no details.
If the hostages are killed during the rescue then the White House will have to go Congress (they have oversight) and explain in a closed session what went wrong. The Congress will not devulge what happened either.

Here is something that you will never know, sometimes a leader has to let the stones fly without defending himself for the greater good. Look at the example of George W. Bush (which just eats your asses up).
