Disclaimer: This applies to not having other knowledge of the specific restaurant/location. Some places are actually great at something you would least expect.

If you go to a nice steakhouse, order the steak
If you go to a nice seafood place, order fish
If you go to a sports bar or on of the places on Charlie's list of casual chains, order the burger or a chicken sandwich. There will be a steak or two on the menu (and you may even be tempted: steak dinner for under $20)

but it will be a poor cut of steak.

Bottomline: go with what they do best.

Cheeky boy. I get that lol. To be fair, I was invited by friends w ere already going to the steak places...they wouldn't have been my choice. That said, it's not always that easy though to find chains that do seafood and fish...steak places though are a dime a dozen. Don't you think?

The better steak places will usually do a decent salmon or tuna.

I tried NF in a Boston burb a bunch of years ago. It was only okay. Like we say in reviews, "would I repeat? No." Legal is much more consistent. Heck they even have reasonable mark-ups on their wines (I seem to remember a bottle of Dom was $150. Smart, people will *actually* buy wine or champagne).

Being a pescaterian whose patrons tend to be meat eaters, I can attest to having had many a great piece of fish at better steak houses. I also heard from one dinner companion, that Eddie V's (Austin) serves a phenomenal steak... However, I'm not sure they have Eddie V's in Dallas, do they? If not, Trulucks gets my thumbs up as far as fish restaurant chains go (though a great dinner companion doesn't hurt either...

)

when I see you weigh in here...

There is a local/regional/national??? chain of pizza places with your name that are always on TV offering a full buffet meal for like $4 or $5...

I tend to not like chains so much as a rule, but some are good.
I find I like steak houses the best for chains: #1 Flemings, #2 Morton’s, #3 S & W.
Houston’s is consistent and good, but their weird service bugs me a bit. They always have a different person showing up at your table.
I find Landry’s and Copland’s restaurants to be either consistently mediocre or just plain bad like Pesci.
Someone mentioned Legal Seafood. I thought it was wonderful. I also like McCormick and Schmicks
The Pappa’s chain is also very consistent with their food though I would have to say their services isn’t the best even at their high end stores.

Curious? Do they still have a restaraunt in Houston called...Boston Sea Party? I went there in during college and it seemed pretty high end to me back then. But my perceptions were quite a bit different back then. But that was the first "white tablecoth" place I ever remember going to.

Oh gosh I remember that restaurant. We had one here in Atlanta. Couldn't you order a steak or a lobster and a seafood buffet came with it?

I met friends for brunch today at a Pappa's restaurant. It was an all you can eat brunch. The omelet stations had tip jars.

So what, if you don't tip you only get half an egg? In my opinion having tip jars in the buffet line is extremely tacky.
