you should go to Kalachandjis' a vegetarian restaurant in east dallas...it is in a beautiful hari krishna temple. the restaurant part is in an open air area with beautiful trees. food is great. you can check out the temple while there...very cool.

or mama fey's bbq in deep ellum. last time i was there i sat at the bar and watched an old episode of bonanza on a little tv while i ate their excellent brisquet. and you get a free can of budweiser with your lunch.

Mia's is an institution (lots of Dallas Cowboys memorabilia there -- the place has the distinction of being both the favorite restaurant of Coach Tom Landry and his wife, Alicia, AND of being the place where Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson met on the night Jones hired Johnson as the new coach).

As for Mi Cocina, it was founded by the son of the owners of Mia's. But the two are not alike. Not at all.

As for things to do, yeah, The Sixth Floor Museum is a must-see for anybody even remotely interested in the Kennedy Assassination. Superb exhibit, with the sniper's nest completely recreated. It'll give you chills.

Head over to the west side of the metroplex and take a tour of Cowboys (now AT&T) Stadium. Doesn't cost much, and the tour is pretty cool, especially if it's your first time in the building. Bring your camera.

Then keep coming west and spend the day in the Fort Worth Stockyards and the evening in Sundance Square (downtown). It's one of the better "downtown" experiences you'll find anywhere, and it's light years better than Dallas' downtown experience. Tons of restaurants, a piano bar, western themed bars, comedy clubs, etc. Eat at Reata, if you can.http://www.reata.net/ I highly recommend the rooftop if the weather is cooperative. Fort Worth also has 3 world class art museum located about 5 minutes west of downtown: The Kimbell (a traditional, non-themed art museum located in unique building that is pretty much a work of art itself), The Amon Carter Museum of Western Art (the collections are what you would expect to find given the name -- lot of Remingtons and Russells there), and the Modern Art Museum (the name says it all). Finally, check and see what's going on at Bass Hall (also downtown right by Sundance Square). It's a world class concert hall built with an art deco motif. You won't find anything like it outside of NYC or maybe Chicago. Great acoustics and just a beautiful venue. If you're real lucky, a big name "modern" artist may be playing there. If not, an evening at the symphony can be enjoyable, and the local theater groups regularly put on plays there.

I am a little more blue collar in taste.
I suggest the Angry dog in Deep elm for burger or great chili dog
Babe's chicken for down home fried chicken and chicken fried steak
I will go with the Angelo's suggestion for BBQ in Fort Worth
Ross Perot museum is new and good. may require book ahead.

pick up a free copy of the Dallas Observer (or go to dallasobserver.com ) for cool events going on in the area...a weekly paper. and go to Fuel City for some of the best mexican-style street tacos you will ever taste. and Velvet Tacos for the most unbelievable gourmet tacos in the universe. a visit to Klyde Warren Park in downtown area is cool too. White Rock Lake for a nice walk...and in April, Dallas Blooms should be going on at the Dallas Arboretum.

Burgers: twisted root and maple and motor are overrated and overpriced. Jakes is as good at half the price.

Tacos: Torchy's. fuel city was bland. Velvet taco was disappointing.


BBQ: lockharts was greasy and overpriced. Hard 8 is fabulous

Sixth floor museum is DEFINITELY something to see while in Dallas!!!!

The new George Bush Library is also a great place to spend a few hours wandering around. (SMU area) and if you like museums Dallas has a very well done Holocaust museum in that area.

Truck yard is great if you like an "Austin" feel.
Al Biernet's is a great local place (not a chain)

Arbor Hills in Plano is a great place for a good hike!!!!

Wow, so many great suggestions, thank you all so much.
In addition to taking in some new sights, we've already been to the 6th Floor Museum, and plan to return to GrapeVine to enjoy some fine Texas wine and to the Flying Saucer. Oh, we do love craft beer, so if there are any suggestion for a good local craft brewery / brewpub we'd love to hear about some of those. Many huge thanks again.

A few suggestions for food...

For BBQ, Pecan Lodge blows everything else away... It has been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives... Get there early or you will be I. Line for HOURS... Also , they are done when they run out, usually 2:00 or. 3:00...

For pizza, go to il. Cane Rosso in Deep Ellum... Great stuff...

For innovative fine dining (but no need to dress up), try FT33...

I like the chipolte ketchup at liberty burger. Not that impressed with the burger but love the chipolte ketchup.

Torchys is a must visit in dallas for some interesting tacos. Better like hot and spicy though.

Mamba has some pretty good fried shrimp and rice. I guess it would be mex-seafood.

One thing dallas is missing is a good thai restaurant. Some of the nastiest pad thai and coconut soup around. Anyone with some suggestions?

Ok, you found one of my areas of expertise!

Deep Ellum Brewery is in Deep Ellum, they are open Saturday afternoons for tasting/social time. Good scene, but not my fave.

Community Brewing is in a big warehouse near the AAC, they have some great brews, nice open area with art/music for Saturday afternoons.

If you get over to Fort Worth, check out Martin House or Rahr for a Saturday afternoon diversion.

There are several others in the area I haven't made it to visit:
Lakewood Brewing, probably some of the best beers in the area (try the Temptress)

Since when is Budweiser drinkable at any temperature? Hell, even Shiner gives me a headache. If you are going to drink beer, I say drink REAL beer, maybe a Belgian ale or something with a real kick. We have lots of fine microbreweries such as Rahr, why drink Walmart beer when you have something crafted by someone who cares about the product....
